Failed MOT yesterday on inefficient brakes, and rusted seatbelt anchor points and suspension area.

Anyway, what's the going rate for someone to do some welding? My local garages quote £35 p/h but I was expecting (hoping  ) for a little less....?

Sounds about average to me 8) You may find a cheaper way of doing it is to agree a price before work starts. ;)

You can certainly get it cheaper, try and find out how good he is shop around a bit, I know when I was living just outside Donny there were a few good backstreet workshops real old school places, that scared the bejesus out of you, down dark lanes in the old industrial areas but good old craftsmanship....There used to be a place in Leeds for the life of me I cant think where it was, only ever went once with a mate but used to get a load of bugs through his place, red victorian brick place .....

Found a place in Bradford off Leeds Road, the guy 'handily' had pictures of a van he'd had through in the past and he claims to do regular work for other owners, anyway, he offered me £30 per hour no VAT, around £200 for the work nesessary so I'm back to take the van in on Monday... if I can get my interior out!? :x

There is a VW specialist in Harrogate who charges £35 per hour so I was thinking a generic back street garage would be £5-10 cheaper, obviously not!

Hi mate ..

I live in Wakefield and have all my own welding tackle if you need a hand ..

Im no expert but do all my own welding ( pics of resto in gallery .. )

Hate to say it but sounds about right if good welder, reckon bodyshops would charge more (in past ask bodyshops to fix a rust problem and some were not interested unless its accident damage). you could try looking for a general engineering / welding company. if you find a small bussiness ask if they will do a CASH deal, worth a try.

A very kind offer sir :D

I've got the MOT work booked in now so due to the short time frame I'll get that done as planned.

However ;) If your ever in the Leeds area and fancy a cuppa T & some biccies, I've got a 37 yr old UK van

Haven't got to any meets yet  Am on the LVC forum now and again and keep threatening to go to their meet...

Once the MOT is sorted I'll try and get out a little more...

If you want your bus to last you'd be more concerned with workmanship than cost.

I've seen lots of mot bodge ups where plates have just been buzzed on over the top of the rot and suprise suprise the rot continues advancing from the inside out and it'll need welding in the same place at the next MOT.

Find someone who'll do a proper job by cutting the rot out and fabricating a repair section from fresh steel.

Just what the Prof says.
I had the front underside done by a local garage (old school), when thy cut away the drivers side floor, it had been bodged sooo many times, under the throttle it had about 6 rusted plates on to of each other.

Im no welder so have to pay for someone to do my work just ashame i havnt got anyone like Hilly 70 near me.

Having both sills done end of the month/ April a mates doing them and i have inherited a welder, could be a steep learning curve.

Just dropped the van off with the welder and he's cutting as much crap out as necessary to weld new plates in. He's going to finish it in red oxide zinc primer stuff so the MOT inspector can see what has been done, my question is what sould I do next? The rest of the area is finished in underseal, should I match this or use something different?
