Hi Guys, hope everyone is well and keeping safe.
The time has come for me to get some tyres on my van and I have a dilemma about the spare. I'm going for 185r14 on the rear and 165/60/14 on the front, but what do I do about number 5??
Wheels are 5.5" all around.
Any ideas and suggestions invited.
Regards, Si.
I think the answer lies hidden in the above advice (be last off the field at a vw gathering and you'll have a choice of spares wheels and tyres, waste water tanks, brollies and possibly some poptop canvas)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,how is it , I’ve not thought of that

We always carry the smaller of the 2 sizes as like Clem has said you can run the smaller tyre on the rear to get you out of trouble but cant put the bigger rear tyre on the front as it will rub or as Sparky says carry 2 spares.

I carry tyre in a can and breakdown cover [emoji28]
I tried that and the best the breakdown cover would do was give me the number for a mobile tyre service. That was two different breakdown services. Their view was if the vehicle had a spare from the factory then it's your own fault if you don't have one

I read my breakdown cover carefully before going this route so am confident that I would be covered if I had a blowout the can could t solve.

Well peeps I got the tyres ordered, fronts 165 65 14 Continental and 185 14 Nexen CT8 for the rear.
Now the tyre shop is struggling to find a valve to fit! Any recommendations for Fuchs??
Regards, Si.

For 165/60 R14 tyres, the typical load index is 75 for normal tyres and 79 for extra-load tyres. Both of these are inadequate, even for the front wheels of a 1968~79 VW Type 2 and would probably be illegal owing to their inadequate load rating!

For 165/65 R14 tyres, the typical load index is 79 for normal tyres and 83 for extra-load tyres. Although better than 165/60 R14 tyres, both of these are still inadequate, even for the front wheels of a 1968~79 VW Type 2 and would probably be illegal owing to their inadequate load rating!

Having illegal tyres on your vehicle can result in a fine of up to £2500 and 3 penalty points per illegal tyre. To avoid fines, penalty points and to ensure safety you must make sure all your tyres are within the UK regulations.
