The hole I'm referring to is the small hole above the hot air intake by plastic pipe.

(I am still looking for the tinware pipe that goes in the bigger hole if anyone has a spare one...)

That's where the overflow for the oil filler goes, should be a pipe running down with a rubber non return valve on it

you can see the pipe here under the filler cap

Think I've got one of those pipes kicking around, the one that pulls hot air from near the 2nd cylinder?

The heat pipe is commonly known as a "stove pipe" so search for that.

he's not talking about that one I believe- higher up, to the right, there's a new one. Looks very clean, small- I'd go with some kind of special equipment/ sump heater etc.

OP- You need the cardboard tube (which you can get from just about any VW place, GSF is usually easiest, and Ideally a "stove pipe" to scoop the air up from under the cylinders.

most importantly, keep that hole blocked up in the meantime!

Thanks for all the comments

...I do have the paper pipe to attach to the "stove pipe" - it's just been "resting" above the hole - so I need the stove pipe to secure that end and to duct hot air from the right place

Rlechecha - I'm interested - if you have one...

The hole is not for oil overflow - that is intact - you just can't see it behind the fanbelt in photo

The bus has always been UK based so hard to see an oil heater ever being present - but very possibly that
bit has been replaced over the years

Thanks to all

Matt
