wiring diagram for 71 bay

have been trying to wire up my 71 1800 bay it has stalk cotrol for wipers but on diagram it shows a dash button for wipers can any one help is there a switch or do u use stalk and ignore switch when wiring or is there a wiring diagram that shows just a stalk without switch bit confused many thanks for any help

The '71 is supposed to have a dash switch for the wipers. If you have them on the stalk it's probably been modified and you'll need to look at another diagram. Where are you getting your wiring diagrams from?

As said above, the wipers originally had a wash/wipe switch on the dash. Seems like yours has been modified with a later column.
From MY1973 the wiper controls moved from the dash to the column.

i thought it was on the stalk but was wrong have you got a pic of the wiper switch so i can search for one many thanks

There was no such vehicle as a 1971 VW 1800 Type 2! However, there was a 1974~75 VW 1800 Type 2, of which I briefly had one. Are you sure that your VW Type 2 is of 1971 model-year, as indicated by the third digit of your chassis number.

Most vehicles, including mine, do NOT have the intermittent wipe facility associated with switch-lever position No. 3

The dashboard-mounted, 1968~72 VW Type 2 windscreen wiper & washer switch can alternatively be used for a retro-fitted rear-window wiper & washer system like mine, if you ever get around to having one.

thanks fellers for all the help much apprecated i got this bay with all stuff missing even had a beetles dash clock in it wiring was a nightmare so through every thing out just got to find a wiper switch if anyone has one / then can start making a new loom theres no wiring

Sounds like a right bitsa, I would be checking the stamped chassis no against the plate and if its been ground out or welded over then I would be very suspicious.

My 71 was built for the US market, has dash wiper switch with two speeds. But deos have a mix of loom colours which made it interesting during its refurb. My advise is get a bus electric guru who will spot stuff straight away. Good luck.

Is the vehicle RHD or LHD?

If LHD, it could be of European or North American specification. If RHD, it could be of British, Australian or South African specification.

The US buses use the same bulb for the stop tail light and the indicator. So VW came up with a rather complex system, (yet without electronics so it's still a series of switches) for the situation when you brake and indicate that you're turning.

The combination, direction-indicator cum headlamp dip switch is weird, with regard to direction-indicator connections.

North American specification, 1968~79 VW Type 2s do NOT have the headlamp flasher facility, unless someone has substituted the British & European specification, 5-terminal headlamp relay and retro-fitted a suitable red cable from terminal 30 on the fuse-box. to terminal-30 on the relay.

If your VW Type 2 is of 1971 or later model-year, you might be okay with regard to the direction-indicator flasher unit!

The USA specification, 1968~69 VW Type 2 direction-indicator flasher unit is extremely weird!

The USA specification, 1970 VW Type 2 direction-indicator flasher unit is one-year-only type, for which it might be difficult and/or expensive to find a direct replacement.

If one has a North American specification, 1968~70 VW Type 2, it would be WISE to carry a spare direction-indicator flasher unit of the appropriate type and check to make sure that it functions properly!!!
