I'd issues with my French slammer plates but once the torsion bars were out they slipped straight into the plate.id say you've got duff plates that have too thick of a coating of zinc plating on them.

Remove the door card and make sure the rod is still attached as it should,if it is and there's no sign of anything out of place pull the door lock mechanism out and clean it and lubricate it with some graphite powder.if that doesn't work id say it's a new mechanism u need.if you can get a cheap...
