What the hell is that whining noise?!!

Yes there is oil in it. I doubt I'd want to show my face round here if I'd not checked that early on. So, tonight I thought I'd slide underneath and rule out bent or otherwise damaged drive shafts. What I found was that the left side shaft floated in and out about 6-10mm nice and easy, the...

What the hell is that whining noise?!!

Video is here https://youtu.be/RRjXX_NkdLU I've swapped the tyres as you suggested ozziedog but there is no real difference in the noise. I guess I should get the front aligned sometime as the wear on the front left is a tiny bit uneven though it stears fine. . I'm still thinking it's at the...

What the hell is that whining noise?!!

Hi fellas, I really need your help. My stock '71 has a whining noise that increases in pitch and volume as speed increases and is louder with the power on. I've had the box rebuilt, all new cv joints and new wheel bearings all round, none of which has made any difference. Now I'm out of ideas...

    Knock or not????

Hopefully its not your main bearings. There Must be end play, it needs some slack. I'd start there, check the big nut that holds the flywheel on, the four cylindrical pegs, the running face of the flywheel, shims, seal etc. Any wear, balling of metal on the surfaces might indicate the source...

    Engine and box removal

Remember to chain or strap the gearbox before pulling the engine, so it doesnt drop. When pulling the gearbox I held the bell end ( ) on my knees as I unbolted it at the front. It was surprisingly light, not really light though! then managed to set it down just fine.

    OIL COMING UP THROUGH DISTRIBUTOR!

Maybe a long shot but the first thing I thought of was the preasure in the crank case. The preasure rises as the temperature increases. This should vent out through the generator stand, down the pipe and out the rubber nipple ( ). I wonder if the new engine had a plug or solid gasket left...

A bit drippy. Brake light switch.

I've replaced a brake light switch but there is a tiny bit of weapage now. the bently book mentions a washer/seal but nothing came out with the old one and I don't remember fitting any when I replaced the master cylinder a couple of years ago. At the moment I've put an O ring between the...

    Rear wheel bearing job

I have to change the bearings in the rear wheel. Question is can It be done with the bearing housing still attached to the van? The bently book shows it removed and in a vice. I don't fancy having to undo those rusted up nuts that hold the hub assembly in place if I don't have to. I read...

one hot manifold one cold and motor won't run

Please help. I've been working on my van all day and the darn thing won't run. I fitted a different engine today with all the same bits as the old one now it won't run. It starts revs up then dies away, tweek the throttle and id does the same again, leave it and it dies. Also more worrying is...

    worrying engine noises

Right, next problem. I have a tapping noise from my engine (stock 1600 otherwise healthy twin port). It is fairly loud at idle and is about the last sound to stop when I shut off the engine. It continues as revs increase but becomes less obvious in the general din. I remembered that John Muir...

    ignition off, horn comes on?!?

Finally solved this. turned out when i was grinding and welding fitting the new front panel a lil bit of metal when astray. lodged in the back of the fuses I found a splinter of steel. Trapped behind one group of two fuses and leaning across to a hairs breath from the next group. a bit of...

    ignition off, horn comes on?!?

Thanks for your input. I don't have a pedal lock (but will look into it for security). Like many intermitent electrical faults it is difficult to imagine what might be the cause without some previous experience. I'll get my tool bag out and report back. Cheers.

    ignition off, horn comes on?!?

Here's my problem for the collective wisdom of volksmania. Mostly my van works great but there are some perculiar things going on with the electrics. Some times in the dead of night the horn comes on, So I get a kick from the wife, sleepily dash down the stairs pulling on some clothes and out...

Just when you think you’re done - new noise. Transmission?

That was my first thought. so i took the side plug out and stuck in my finger in, that came out dry so I rushed out and bought oil. loads came out though when I opened the drain plug so i recon i was just short of the level with my finger. I filled it up with new oil and have thought about...

Just when you think you’re done - new noise. Transmission?

After getting an advisory free mot for the first time! I get a new and worrying noise. Only apparent in 3rd and 4th there is a whine a bit like you get when reversing. Let off the power and it stops. I’ve read up a bit and in my opinion it is the ring and pinion. Please, any thoughts on...

Forming/rolling/pressing strengthening ribs in sheet steel

Great stuff. this guy's really talented and got time to photograph and annotate too! When I make repair sections, bending edges onto curved profiles, I cut 2 pieces of 6mm birch ply to shape, clamp them into a sandwich around the steel, and hammer the edge over. the ply is easy to shape, and...
