Can anyone om here play the uke?

I know its a bit of an odd one but Ive been fancying one for a while and today I finally took the plunge (I didn't break the bank) and bought one. A ukulele that is.

I know to some it probably brings back bad memories of George Formby and the likes but when you look around on youtube there are loads of people playing all genres of music on them.

Also, you guitar players will probably relate to this - I have this Idyllic image in my head where Ive got the bus parked up next to the beach, the bbq is going and Ive got the uke gently weeping and a bit of a sing along going!

Anyway, 123 I'm back in the room. Can anyone actually play the uke? The bloke in the shop reckons these are "so easy to play" theres no need to buy a book or anything just to look on the Internet I'm happy to do so but as you know, there is so much stuff on the Internet it can be overwhelming.

At the moment the best site Ive found is "uke hunt" (say it fast, say it fast! tee hee :lol: ) but has anyone got any other tips or recommendations?

No, but I can play the mandolin!

I reckon that unless you have enormous ears and a Lancs accent you should take it back and swap for the eight stringed beauty that is a mandolin.

Dude we're on the same wavelength :lol: I've got the same images of being sat at the side of the van strummin away.
I can't play but have thought about buying a Uke for a while...
Think I might have to invest in one now..

Now thats what I like.I too want one, Christmas prezzie ?.There`s a band in Sheff called the heavily pregnant brothers do all covers from arctic monkeys to oasis.Look on u-tube not sure but they may be on.There`s usually 6 of em playing,.look pretty cool.
Just checked you-tube out and they are on.If you listen to the lyrics they play on them to localise them to Sheffield,very funny.Hope it inspires you like it did me.Keep us up to date on how you get on.

The uke is is currently going through a resurgence,partly due to the publicilty given by the ukelele orchestra. here is a link to a forum called 'the resonator' mostly George Formby fans but other uke stuff in there as well....

ps there was a splitty owner in C&B a few months back who had a uke as well!

We have a couple of ukes - one was a prize in a dance competition in the 30s (and before you ask it wasn't me that won it :roll: ). We play these just for a laugh usually at Xmas. There's local guy who plays and collects them (Eddie Jones in Taunton). As said above they are becoming quite popular - although I have yet to see one on a stage in Devon.

Doris - Check you out ! Thats awesome! I must admit, Although im only 27 my Dad has always been a massive George fan so I do plan to give some of his stuff a bash if I get there.

Phil and Andy - If you both get them for Christmas we'l have enough to do the show circuit - move over druids brew!

i've wanted one for a while now but have not made the move. Been messing around with guitar for bout 4 years and love that but fancy the fact that the uke can be packed away in the van when its playtime.
I shall be asking santa for one come xmas!!

Thats weird dood, i used to have one mainly as its the same strings as a bass G D A E except upside down! result 8)

You can indeed dood, I play the bass and got the mandolin because of this reason. Happy days!
