If the flaps are there, you`ll see their axis points / fixing rods poking out of the holes of the fan housing. If they ain`t there, you`ll see the holes they should be fitted in

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Thermostats a good idea too

Cheers ozziedog

They are missing then! Am I right in thinking if went for j tubes that I wouldn't need them?
And do you have to add anything else for cooling?

The flaps are more to do with directing the cooling away whilst the engine is warming up but I `` think `` they may aid the cooling a little because they direct it. With or without j tubes it makes no odds, it`s just that with j tubes you don`t have heating for your cab. Make sure you have all the tinware and there are no holes or missing screws, and the rubber seal is intact around the tinware.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, What`s the prob ??

Think I have all the tinware I'll take a picture tomorrow and post up.
Never had heat in cab the last two winters, cables not connected to heat exchangers, but had a fiddle with levers on exchangers last week and know got permanent heat in cab.
In this weather not good.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Mine goes up to the screen, opening quarter lights come up trumps

Cooling flaps are not just about warming up. If you monitor them they are often closed or only partially open in cool weather - they do exactly the same job as a thermostat on a water cooled car.

Maximum wear occurs on a cold engine. Warming it up quickly reduces wear.

Running an engine over cooled significantly increases wear. Without a thermostat the engine will never reach operating temperature in cool weather. This applies to all engines, VW aircooled are no exception.

Why do people think its ok to run without?

Although the engine will run without one, they don't run without an air filter because they know it increases wear.

Weird!

What's on these vehicles is needed, otherwise it would have been left off at the factory.

These vehicles were built down to a price. There's lots of things you can do to improve them.

Leaving stuff off isn't one of them.
