Anyone ever done it?

Im planning our summer trip and we were going to go back to the Cote D'Azur region again, but then realised we can get a ferry from there to Corsica. Its about £400 return from Nice.

Anyone been there and done that?

Thanks, Mike :)

I woulld like to try the local cheese

the link goes to a italian cheese but on corsica they have a simulair one ;)

Thanks guys

Ive got the ferry down quite a bit via Ferrysavers, about £300, so I reckon its all good. I should manage a free/cheap English Channel crossing via the Tesco Clubcard, so the killer will be petrol  but, hey, its got to be done.

UK > Calais/Dunquerque > Port Grimaud > Nice > Corsica > Nice > Menton > Port Grimaud > EuroDisney > Calais/Dunquerque > UK

Its two days full driving to get to the South East area and its all easy enough from there. We'll do it over about three weeks I think.

Anyone whos ever been, in a van or otherwise? Any info gratefully received. :)

I did the GR20 which is a walk across Corsica !! The scenery and food are amazing and there are lots of good campsites which are ideal for the van ! Ferry crossing sounds expensive though !! Pick up the rough guide to Corsica

Eurotunnel vouchers ordered and Corsica Ferry booked!

3 weeks during August. 8)

Nice one dude 8)

I hope all goes well for your journey - did a similar journey in the car (Audi A8 so slightly different ;) ) and found it be a very enjoyable drive (did it over 2 days also with a stopover at Strasbourg).

Hope you get the chance to send pics and updates to the forum during your trip

not related to corsica, and excuse this if you have already done it ....... but as your so close i'd recommend a trip over the border to ventimiglia. my other half has an apartment in ventimiglia alta (the old part) and we spend a few weeks a year there. not as upmarket as the french side of the border but nice. bit of a working town but has a beach, bars, restaurants ..... and is very friendly.

if you want to eat its fairly cheap, i'd recommend a couple of restaurants. porta nizza in ventimiglia alta and vesuvio at the bottom btween there and the newer part of town. neither are swish but the food is good.

Cool. Thank you. Last time we were in the area we had a night in Menton which we liked and went over to Latte ... it was a bit rubbish so we packed off back, but it great to get a tip and Im sure we will check it out in the time we have alloted for 'other stuff'. 8) 8)

from memory, latte is just a village really. i think we've driven through on the high road to menton. it would probably have been only another 10 mins drive to ventimiglia for you.

we've been to menton a few times too, antique market mostly and eaten a couple of times. also villefranche sur mer nearer nice. liked it there too (antique market there too).

prefer the italian side though i have to say. however, that may be because my partner is italian (well, her parents are) and she has family there too. it always seems more down to earth, however that may be because the south of france is generally quite upmarket opposed to what is just across the border.

some other nice italian places a bit futher on .... bordighera and san remo.

and i can recommend a barber in ventimiglia too, mimmo the singing barber.

bit of a star in the sixties apparently, toured the world. i had a cut and wet shave for about 16 euros. i was a little worried as he was wearing a wig though!

anyway, some info on ventimigilia and ventimiglia alta:

Just thought Id update this thread...

Were off on Saturday (13th) getting the Eurotunnel crossing and heading south. Weve the ferry booked on Friday (19th) to Corsica and return a week later.

Vans serviced and freshly MOT'd and I guess I cant do much more now :?

Weve not booked any campsites :msn4: I know of a couple in the St Tropez area that are normally pretty accomodating and genuinely have no idea where were heading on Corsica so we'll suck it and see .... weve a hotel booked in Nice the before and the night after we sail to/from Corsica at Mrs Clem's insistance

Ill keep this thread updated as (free!) wi-fi allows!

Sounds great, have a good trip!
VW friends of me are traveling around Corsica right now in a t1 split and a latebay westy and when i look at the pics they send to me.....pff it's heaven!!

Have a gr8 holiday! I thought I was adventurous touring Cornwall for the next 2 weeks without booking..... Looks like you just raised the bar

Just

Booking schmooking! I drive my wife mental with my refusal to plan every last mile!

Just to update this thread - we did it :)

The crossing from Nice was really easy to suss out and we got loaded and boarded quickly and easily - nice cabin and the boat was really well appointed which was nice for the 6 hour crossing. Not much to do, but a nice chance to relax on deck in the blazing sunshine 8) and get a pretty good meal in the restaurant - on board prices were dear, like everywhere.

Docked in Ajjacio about 9pm with no idea what to do  so drove to a local beach and camped up the night after assurances from a 76 Westy driver that it would be fine, and it was! Spent the next day lazing on the beach literally feet from where we camped.

Had two nights then in a hotal appartment during my daughters birthday, so did some local stuff - a trip into Ajjacio in the evening for a local music festival and a day at a local Aquaparc.

Then set off south. We ended up driving a more mior road through the mountains which was amazing but hard going - steep ups in a fully loaded Westy, and steep downs with old drum brakes and plenty of sharp turns. The roads surfaces didnt look too bad, but were undulating so plenty of beam smashes into the road - ouch!

Ended up on a random campsite when we wanted to stop essentially. Easy to accomodate us and was just over the road from a perfect beach. Nothing on the beach but a few folk, so had to be self sufficient. The campsite only had a snack bar that openeded at odd times and there were no shops close by, so organisation was required. We failed!

We took a days driving off to Sartene, one of the central points of Corsican history and then down to Bonifacio the most southern point where you can see Sardinia from. The searing heat was unbeleivable, they mist water into the streets along the harbor to cool people off!
The scenery and mountains and crystal seas were perfect and driving back at night the sunsets were superb - it was just the perfect experience in the van Ive dreamed of, I think.

One point though, when you set off from a campsite in the middle of nowhere that you came came across- make a note of where it is and whats its called - long story and a late night ....

Last evening before we had an early doors crossing back to Nice we planned another night on the beach in Ajjacio. We had a few hours late afternoon on the beach and it was when we were getting tea ready, my wife alterted me to the sight of a man and snake running across the sand  I cant really explain the extent of my wifes long term snake phobia, she can easily faint at the sight of one. That night we slept in the van in the car park of the hotel we'd stayed at earlier.

There are a few pics on my blog, please take a look, but Ill do a proper trip thread soon. If anyones thinking about 'doing' Corsica, then do so - its ace! Sardinia for us next I reckon ;)

Hipshaker - we made it to Ventimiglia, but time and conditions meant it was just a quick look ... another time!

Sounds and looks fantastic Clem!! Glad it all 'mostly' went to plan, but then it wouldn't have been an adventure without challenges right? Really hoping to do some sort of euro trip nxt year ourselves and by the sounds of that heat & hills a subtle engine upgrade is a must! Awesome pics in the blog too..

Lots of challenges! I spend so much time preparing some stuff that other important things get completely forgotten, and with an 'it'll be allright' attitude I end up in some scrapes ... all good fun though! I love it.
