G'day folks,

I'm just nailing the fan shroud back on the engine and when doing so I can see that the dynamo doesn't fit snuggly in the pedestal. There is a gap of 2.5mm between the dynamo and the seat of the pedestal at the pulley end. It's as if the dynamo is being pulled down at the fan end. I've tried mounting the dynamo without the fan shroud and a similar gap is still there.

Is this OK or am I missing something? Does anybody have pics of what their dynamos look like.

Ta very much

Ian

Hi Ian

Are you fitting the dynamo clamp, like a big pipe clamp? Does the dynamo pull down once the fan belt is on?

Would post pics but camera is bust.

Evenin' Noddy,

Nah the gap remains even when the clamp is torqued up. There is a slight ridge (0.2mm) on the seating face of the pedestal which isn't enough to introduce what I'm seeing and it looks like it should be there as opposed to it being a dodgy casting, it is a genuine VW pedestal by the way.

Also, where does your fan shroud sit in relation to the upper cylinder tin? I can't get mine within 5mm of the press line on the cylinder tin..........

My camera is knackered too so I can't show any pics.

Cheers for the reply

Ian

Are the bit of an engine that was previously together or are there new parts, which ones are new if so.

Is the dynamo fitted 90 degrees out, as for cylinder tins to fan housing on my engine the swage line on the fan housing sits just on top of the cylinder tin.

The only other thing I can think of that might cause this is the fan housing is bottoming out on the engine case before it should holding the fan housing high.

Will try and get you some pics from amobile phone tomorrow.

I don't think it's hitting the engine case first, but I do have a suggestion as to what it might be. I've had trouble when the rear bottommost part of the fan shroud hasn't gone inside the cylinder tin, so you have to pull it back up, slide a wide flat bladed screwdriver in, and guide into the cylinder tin. You have to do it by feel as it's behind the shroud! I hope I described it well enough!
