Just fitted a new fuel pump as mine was the original pump that was pissing fuel into the engine bay. Anyway when i get the engine started it coughs, splutters, farts, pops and generally sounds like a crock of ****. The only way i can get it to idle is to advance the timing that much thats its drinking petrol like an alky :(

Ran a compression test on No.3 cylinder and only getting 85 PSI so i know at some point the engine is going to have to come out but would like to get it running for the short time as i need this while the other cars are being serviced / mot'd.
Any ideas?

did you take the distributer out to change fuel pump ...... maybe plug leads not back in correct order ?

Update,
I have managed to get the van running, the dizzy nut had come loose, so at least it now starts and idles but another problem has started.
I took it for a drive after i got it running and when i boot it the engine starts popping again but if i let off slighty and then gently accelerate everythings fine.
Is this the fuel pump struggling to keep up with the carbs requirements or the the fuel pump hasn't got enough pressure, if insufficiant pressure then how do i correct this?

If it was running fine before, but you were losing petrol from the pump, perhaps its now running rich, and your carb needs re-tuning?
There should be no problems with pressure.

if your just running stock carb ......... i,d guess fuel pump o.k and more likely you need to start by setting timing 1st and then do the carb adjustments .

Running a Weber progressive!
Been out in it today to fetch 2 new doors form Volksmagic and to be honest its running fine, had a play with the timing last night and tweaked the carb slightly.
Still dont think its perfect yet but at least its now drivable.
When i get my Timing light back off my mate i will set the timing properly (i used an old light with out an advance setting so had to use the marks on the pulley)

glad to hear your mobile.......... you can fit the doors this weekend instead of messing with engine then !

Unfortunatley i'm working all weekend, and as the doors nedd (at least) primering the van will stay as it is for now.
Still considering rebuilding the engine as i done a quick compression test on 1 cylinder (front left - the easiest 1 to get to) and only got 85 PSI so at some point i need to get the heads off and have a look
