Hi i am going to attempt to change the pads on my front brakes,is there anything else i need to change or any nasty surprises in store,am a newbie and injoying getting me hands dirty at the wekend, the reason i am thinking of doing this is jacked the van up Sun the drivers side wheel spins freely but the passenger side is as stiff as hell and the van is pulling to the left.

it could be a few different things...

a warped disc, seized or sticky piston in the caliper/drum, or the brake hose may have worn and collasped inside.

what condition are the hoses in? is stiffness constant or is it only at one point when you rotate the wheel?

Usually if the pads are gone you'll get a rasping of the metal backing on the disc/drum. This can cause unwanted heat and possibly even warp the disc/drum.

If the hoses are old/worn looking (cracked rubber) i would replace them while your there, as its cheap and easy to do but requires bleeding the system so youl need fluid too, but for the peace of mind its worth it.

if you change the pads and hoses and its still there its most likely a sticky piston in the caliper/drum and if your disc brakes you will need a refurb (kits cost £14 for two wheels) there was a good article on this in camper and bus last month. For drum brakes this is slightly more expensive

sorry i was assuming its discs up front? as you mentioned pads and not shoes. hope this helps.

are you 71 or 72?

if your 72 should be easy to get pads... 71 is slighty harder as they were one year only.

JK has 71 pads, i had mine changed in december :D

Would definately recommend chaning the hoses, had the same problem with my bay (but it had been standing 14 years sr so).
Fitted new rubber hoses (alround) changed the fluid and bled all the brakes.
All sweet
