Morning guys, right Gearbox query this time. Is it possible for the layman to change the driveshaft oil seals, or is anything specialised required? As far as I can see there’s just a ring of dome nuts around the stub shafts – is it as simple as whipping these off and fishing the seal out?

Hr. Haynes issues fairly dire warnings that unless you aren’t taking gearboxes apart as a regular hobby then this isn’t the place to start.

The gearbox is currently out, so access is easy – am in the process of removing over ½” of 47 year old oil clag from around it! But no doubt that the driveshaft oil seals are responsible for some of it.

Also – mine being a 68 – special oil seals, of course, at £19 each, not the regular £4 ones! Such is life…

Thanks all,

/R

Yes, I did mine (68 box). Theres nothing special going on and not much can go worng. Obviously keep it all clean but its an easy job.

done mine last week, straight forward, though putting the new seal in took a little care, I had to tap it in using a home made seal press just a x section galv pipe with a folded flange on it to save bending the seal with a copper punch

Right guys, I have to admit I'm still struggling with this one. I've undone the ring of 6-off dome nuts, but there,s no way that the ring they hold in will fit over the driveshaft's inner flange. I expected to find that the travel on the nuts would allow that ring to be withdrawn sufficiently far that I would see a roll pin or similar inside to tap out - but it seems to have a sleeve attached to the back of it?

trying to upload some photos but have spent about an hour so far with no joy :-(

It's the pissing ipad that's the trouble it seems to f**k about with photo box how are you supposed to 'select all' of a 15 line url when it gives you about half a nanosecond to hit select all before the select button disappears

Success is mine! Well, success in uploading photos, no success on the gearbox yet!!

You'll need to remove the driveshaft flange first. It's held on by a circlip which could be hidden by a plastic plug.

Got it!!!

Thanks Brian - the plastic plug was exactly the same colour as the metal of the driveshaft flange - it all looked like one piece!

Great stuff, thank-you!
