Hi all, my 1970 1600 Westy is very noisy in 4th gear, i think gearbox needs rebuilding/ replacing .Does anyone know what best option would be?
Thanks Paul :D

Have you checked the transmission oil level?

Should be at the bottom of the fill port. Try changing the transmission oil first use castrol EP 80W 90 from halfords I think you will need 4L. Do you get noise in any other gear?

Has oil in it, not sure how old, so draining and changing tommorrow.
There dos`nt seem to be any noise in other gears.
Hoping an oil change may improve things!

Only asked if noisy in other gears as this might point to something other than gear box if each gear made noise.

Are your CV joint wheel bearings etc ok? These can be noisy at higher speeds if worn.
