is it just in 4th?

I take it the lamp lights when the ignition is on and a second or two after the engine starts?

whats the belt condition and tension like?

yes just in 4th

yes ligths when ignition is on

wouldnt no if good or bad,the tension seemed good when i put it back

changed fan belt ,with about half rev the light is on,thats with no head lights on,
would the regulator be the next thing to change :?:

Check the carbon brushes in the dynamo, you can see the top one by looking through the window in the top of the dynamo, its the thing with the small braided copper wire coming from it. The brush should be sat proud of the metal work it slots into, if not it wont be making good contact with the communicator.

The only thing is worn brushes causing the gen light to come on, usually the gen light goes out once the engine is revved.

fan belt should have about 10mm deflection when you push mid way between the top and bottom pulley.

Measure the output from the dynamo throughout the rev range. Should be a steady 13.5V or thereabouts. I'm guessing that yours falls off at higher revs - this usually means that the new brushes are sticking in the holders, so check that out first. Also check the commutator isn't choked with carbon dust from your new brushes - easy to clean with a sharp piece of hard plastic or thin blade. If dynamo output is OK then the regulator points are getting burnt.

PS - I'm on the Devon/Somerset border so if you get really stuck then pm me.
