Hi guys,
anyone any ideas on this....Geny been lit on for a few weeks now, seems to be the same brightnes regardless of engine revs. on one occasion last week I was out at night & it went off and my headlamps became bright as if someone had flicked a switch, but when I started it up later - Geny light lit & back on battery power  !!

So,I've done the tests from Haynes manual & speedy Jims pages (http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/gen.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and the Geny only seems to be giving out 4ish Volts. Brushes OK, Commutator cleaned,re polorized (as per speedy Jim pages) and still not charging battery/Gen light on.

Is there anything else to check before I put a ' Generator wanted ' post up? :( Thanks in advance :)

p.s.The Haynes manual shows the connections on the top the Generator the opposite way round from what they actually are.... what type/amps Geny will mine be or be should I be looking for? its a 69 SP 1600 ?

The Thick Red should be on D+ and the Blue should be on Df and the Brown should be screwed to the back onto the genny case. these then go to the same marked terminals on the regulator.

outputs from the genny should be..

at 2500 rpm 2-3 volts

if reading is out then check brushes..

then slowly raise revs and you should see volts going upto 12 and you would really need a amp meter to show a charge of 2 amps if much more or less then genny at fault. if results are as above fault lies with regulator or wiring.

Thanks mate, have a green wire instead of blue - that OK?

having trouble getting to the regulator at the back in the dark, can I take it off and earth it somewhere more accesable do you think?

???? which do you mean the gennie or regulator.

the gennie needs its earth wire otherwise the charge will not happen, some seem to think they will earth through the case/ engine but if the gearbox earth strap is missing then this does not happen either so this little wire is important. its really the only place there is you can screw a wire in to not cause a short across the windings. or get tangled up in anything. removing the carb can give the access you need to this screw sometimes.

certainly sounds that like it could be worth trying a different reg. Remember that the van ones are different from bug ones (higher amp capacity) the clue is in the fact that the lights got brighter when the gen light went out.

Of course - but what does it all mean? never done it since!
Now,I'm waiting on a regulator.
going to Tatton tommorow, when I see a load of regulaotors on a table, how do I know which is good for mine?... what am I looking for, is there a part no or something?

Well boys and girls, I've just come in from the cold wet drive..........Sorted!
Don't actually know what I've done but its worked. I took the reg of and cleaned all the contacts, screwed it back to earth, also re polorized the dynamo.when I tried re polorizing the duff one, it turned alot slower. when I done this one today, It had a good old spin on it!

either way - it seems to have worked! a good run to VWNW tommorow will prove it!
Yay - I love my bus even more now :D
Thanks for your help everyone, hope Ican help you one day - and I now declare this thread closed! 8)

In case you look at this thread before you go and are considering buying a spare reg, one of the brackets that mount it to the body has a load of info stamped on it, somewhere it will say 38A - this is a van one, beetle ones will have 30A
