have one side not working at all with a lot of tension on the cable at the lever, the not working side plastic sleeve where the cable runs the last 12 inches or so to the hub is cracked in 2 places and the inner sleeve is not a smooth curve at these two positions, so I guess corrosion gets in here and glues the cable to the sheeth, is this what happens? I'm assuming I need new cable(s), 2nd question is, is there anything else which exhibits same symptoms?

and finally why does Schofield sell one part number for all years, and Just Kampers has three?

Yes it's the flexible conduits that cause the handbrake cable to seize. Also check the fixed conduits to see if there is any bad rust as they can collapse and jam things up. I would fit 2 new cables as it will prove easier to balance the brakes later. Make sure you grease the cables where they pass through the fixed conduits. GSF only list 2 types Pre 71 and post 71.

thanks for the tip, will check the rigid bits tommorrow.

I can see from the JK pictures that the later type has a longer threaded adjuster than the two earlier numbers, I have one of these on the van, and a shorter one the other side, so they both assemble ok and must have both worked at some point. I ran a piece of string down the flexible conduits and both sides are the same length.

I have a local GSF so I can nip round in the morning and save waiting for post, checked their site, they list 4 numbers!!!!!! The latest is the cheapest, as with JK, is this just a quantity thing or are they a lower standard? I'll talk to Glynn anyway (derby), he seams to know every bay part number off by heart.

There are 2 types depending on year. Pre 71 the cables attach directly to the handbrake lever and post 71 the cables attach to a balance bar pulled by a rod as shown in this picture. The up to 67 on the GSF site is for Splitscreen vans which are different again.
