Please tell me that my only option to replace mine is to spend about £95 EACH for new complete units
68 Bay, RHD, so three screws in the chrome surround....

What is your actual problem? Yes you can spend £95 per unit if you wish. But, we used a pair of headlamps off a MK 1 Golf and they fitted to a '68 LHD with a slight mod to the mounting frame (Golf not the Bus).

I don't wish!!
Yep - I remember reading about that....sounds like a plan.
One headlight has a reflector 'enhanced' by having rust coloured water sitting in it half way up for a few years - that can probably be cleaned up though - on the other side the 'adjustment ring' - for want of a better description - the thin band/loop that the adjusting screws hang off - has fallen apart.

Out of interest, on the basis that I'm unlikely to have time to trawl scrappies, are the Golf units available from somewhere like GSF/Europarts? If so, any particular year (or range) to look for.
I'm sure its obvious if I saw a unit, but roughly what adjustment is needed to the light unit to fit - is it 'complete' - sorry for all the questions!
Cheers for the tip....

The ones we (me & clarkson 46) used were genuine Hella ones from an '84 Mk1, but I think that they are all the same. They list 3 different lamps for all years, Hella, Repro and crystal, but I don't know if they include in the frames.

The adjustment was nothing more complicated than offering up the Golf unit and the either elongating existing mounting holes or at worst drilling new ones. I don't know if the Golf units come complete from GSF with their mounting frames. There may be more models in the VW range that offer a similar option. At the end of the day, it's £190 versus £20 from a scrappy, the £170 difference would buy a lot of time. It's your call.

Late aircooled bugs also run a unit simular to the early golf, i have just fitted these to my '70 westy, straight in no mods needed, they were from a 1976 rhd 1200 bug 3 screw fixing with seperate trim ring

if that helps
