I have removed these by popping the small plastic retaining (clips) pegs out from the end of the levers, but in the Bentley manual it says remove them are the pivot on the mounting bracket.

Getting the clips back in is a pain though.

Once the plastic clips are removed I have never put them back and they are fine, you still need to retain the metal clips though.

Take the dash out and using a 4.5mm (i think) socket on a small extension place it over the back of the white clip and it should knock out without doing any damage,

Swapped mine for mcj's billet ali ones recently.
Froggy has right idea using socket to squeeze the plastic expander but I did it through the glovebox and radio holes in the dash
Bit fiddly but patience pays off

I did this a few years back.

I used the radio cut out in the dash to do it.

Push the plastic clips back through the holes. Use some pointed nosed pliers and a small screw driver. They should all come out easily. I managed to put them back in too!

Good luck.
