My brother just picked up a beauty 1973 bug this evening, unfortunately some idiot in a fed ex lorry has pulled into the back of it on the motorway, and destroyed the rear end, I know a normal insurance repairer will right it off, who can we contact to get it done without righting it off. Lorry rammed him up the and my brother wasn't even breaking

It's the insurance company who decide if it's a 'total loss' NOT the repairer.
I'm assuming FedEx has accepted responsibility, therefore it is their insurance company you will be dealing with. They will determine the appointed repairer, compare their repair quote to current market value and then decide on repair or total loss.
It's common to be able to buy back the salvage and repair it yourself.
My daily was hit in the rear, repair quote £2600 but value £1800. They gave me £1800, I bought it back for £150, got it fixed for £350, drove it for another 3 years and then sold it for a bargain £600 due to a cock up on e-bay (should have been £900)
It could be to your advantage for the insurers to write it off if you can buy it back at a reasonable price. ;)

as above, you can also nominate a specialist repair shop to provide a quote.
I bought back my Caterham on a Cat D write off, got the car and the balance of valuation back, rebuilt it far cheaper than any repairer.
You should scout the classifieds looking for similar cars to get the market value and never accept the 1st offer they give you. You may also consider involving the police as it was driving without due care... Or at least raise this with their insurer as well...
