Hi All,
I got an Ipod Nano for my birthday (40th  ) and
have seen them mounted in the ashtray.
Does any one know how this is done?
Any pics or advice would be good :D
Also, any one got a spare ashtray ;)
Cheers Paul.

Hi, congrats with you birthday. ;) .

This is the setup of a Dutch Earlybay owner, I don't know if it helps. :D

He used a standard desktop USB docking station, but in your case this offcourse should be an iPod docking station:

Thanks Airtime,
Thats exactly what i was thinking of.
Any one know what type of docking station i would
need to use in this set up?
Cheers Paul.

Nice one Airtime!

I'am about to do the same with my Ipod Nano.

@ CHILDSEY; Did you Ipod Nano came with a docking station? Mine did...

This is my setup (without the original vw radio).

I had to custumize a plug to make it fit.

I'll fit this Ipod holder in the astray with the wires for electricity and the audio.
Just have to find time to do it.... I'll post some photo's!

Hi Surfbus,
Yeah mine has a docking station.
I think i will have to adapt it, like you have.
I was hoping to buy someing ready made.
Where did you get the connector to hook up to old style radio?
Cheers Paul.

Hello paul,
I bought it together with the radio from this guy:
http://www.oldtimerautoradio.nl/
He sells the connectors alone as well.

@61 stu; Always nice to help somebody!

i just used a standard docking station glued into the ashtray, hole drilled through the back, belkin charger then a 3.5mm jack lead to an amp in the glove box.....

only bad thing is you can only control the volume from the amp.

OK, I know I'm rather dense when it comes to ANY technology so i'm struggling a bit here! Presumably the 3.5mm jack plug is the 'output' to the amp. You mention a charger, 12v to whatever voltage the i-pod uses, where is a good place to get one? Also, a 'standard i-pod dock'. I have a Bose sound dock but i'm not pulling that apart for the bit the i-pod fits on! Which wires to which pins as well?
If you wanted to get the parts and just pop round and fit it all for me ....... ;)

thats it, i used a normal desk top ipod dock which a normal ipod car charger plugged into,to power it.
then run a lead from the headphone out socket on the dock to the amp aux input.
i used stuff like this.....

Both nice set ups, but I think I favour the ash tray install. Know its been done before but still think it looks pretty cool!
the-irv, thanks very much for the links, most helpfull. Will be ordering that very stuff in the morning.

just remember to get a dock that fits in the ashtray (i also stuck something under dock to mount it more flush
with the top of the ashtray) also you will need to cut the back of the ashtray and the ashtray holder to run the cables.
beware of the spring inside, you'll see that when you take it apart.

Hello Pete, i think the ipods run 12 volts...
When you bought an ipod Nano you should have a docking station/holder like i showed.

Thanks for the help guys. Just to throw a spanner in the works, I have been offered a nearly new Sony head unit which has a built in i-pod lead so the i-pod sits in the glove box and is controlled from the head unit. Decisions, decisions!!
Thanks again, Pete.
