My van has had a custom exhaust fitted and I want to return it to original.... With heat exchangers and standard[ish] exhaust.

My engine is a 1641, does this mean I can/can not use the standard 1600 heat exchagers??

Any feedback whether you have returned your vans exhaust to original or a pictorial log of anyone who has fitted the heating system, would be much appreciated.

I run standard 1600 heat exchangers on my 1641 bug, previously with a 4 into 1 exhaust backbox system (now stock exhaust).

No difference to J tubes unless you have a high-cc, high revving engine - a 1641 will cope no problems with heat exchangers. Fitting the exchangers isn't tricky, but all the extra parts to make it work well are a pain to get right.

Try to get original VW heat exchangers, the repros are rubbish!

Repro Vs genuine insides...

I have spent the evening under my van putting heat exchangers (well one) on. I have a Monza 4-tip (still) and have put on a beetle exchanger as thats what i had, and my engine is a 1641 (I was told by the PO). The main issues I had was the various parts left over didn't all match the parts I had so some temporary fixes were required.

In essence, 1600 exchangers will fit a 1641.

Forgot to add, the beetle and van exchangers are essentially the same, they just have different operating levers (bug ones can be adapted to fit van).

So if you can find a pair of good Bug ones, they'll be OK on your bus :).

Where in Sunny Yorkshire are you Van Fan? I presume this is your bus: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9001&p=87940#p87940" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ? If so you have the same exhaust/engine set up as me.

Yeh thats the van.
Have already had to shell out some cash, just to get the brakes working, had to have the brake pipes completely renewed.
Worth it though, I am new to vw and I think the vans owesome.

I am in York.

Well eventually got the 4into1 exhaust removed and had to install 2 new studs. Then got one of the heat exchangers on and all associated pipework, then started on the other side, what a b*ll ache. Just need to put the last two jubilee clips on and test it out, which is tuesdays job as I need to finish Christmas shopping for er indoors..... I hate shopping.

See what you meen by fidley little bits.

Ah, I'm obv wrong about having the same exhaust

When I did mine, the second side (in my case the o/s) was much quicker as I had all the parts and had learnt what to do when doing the first one - and it just fitted better! Don't forget to check all the 'pipe-work' inside the van is intact. After installing mine I felt a slight warm breeze over my feet then when I got home found the rear outlet under the rear seats were disconnected and all the hot air was under the rear seat - a nice seat warmer but useless for the driver!! I'll be capping these off in the sort term and I've a few other 'gaps' in the system to seal up!

Good luck my friend! 8)
