with a word of warning on cheap repro chroming, the cheap door handle I bought 18 months ago has more pitting
than the original at 37 years old

Also, when you fit it, make sure you have it adjusted in the correct place (to engage the latch correctly) first, otherwise you won't be able to open the hatch!!!

there is one for sale on this thread...

however you have to budget in for re chroming at about £20 and a new key cut at about £12 - £15.
having said that I'd rather put money that way into an original VW item that anything repo!

Its been raised before but do you really want to lock the engine lid, what happens if you are unfortunate enough to have an engine bay fire, makes it a lot harder to get to it and put it out :?:

Fit an automatic fire extinguisher? Or keep a regular eye on your fuel pipes and sytems and battery cables for chaffing.

I know where you're coming from, even if you do all of the above, you could still get a fire and when that happens you could panic and by the time you unlock the engine bay it's too late. It's not like someones going to steal your whole engine is it? They might steal parts from it,I suppose it depends where you park it and for how long?

I think the thread title should be 'locking engine lid catch 22'

I was thinking about this the other day and was wondering if there would be anyway to disconnect the button and have a hidden cable underneath that operated the catch, the best of both worlds, bit more security and easy access if you needed it,...............what do you reckon??

I don't see the problem :? get into the habit of unlocking it before you go anywhere and lock it as you would your doors when you park up! best of both worlds then

Exactly, this is what I do :)

If I'm parking somewhere dodgy, I will get out, remove the rotor arm and then lock the engine bay. This means I have to unlock the engine bay to be able to drive the van again ;)
