I have just bought a 69 Clipper with a rear view mirror with an unusually long stem. Anyone know anything about these mirrors, not the least why they were that way?

originally designed to enable drivers to 'see' out of a back window partially obscured by roof-mounted 'camper cupboards'.

*normal* people just put up with *normal* mirrors and twist their neck an extra half a degree to see.

rumour has it that there's a house in gloucestershire with over a hundred of these much sought-after accessories, all neatly labelled up in individual jiffy bags, alongside nearly fifty westy extended sliding door handles

i've been in the house; i've even weed on the linoleum but i've never had as much as a sniff of the *secret* cupboard :x

I'd love to get my hands on one of those!
imagine having a mate (i say mate, he's clearly not though  ) who seems to buy and sell them like normal people go through say, toilet roll, and it's always "the wrong year" or "the wrong colour" or "ooh it'd faded in the california sun" but never "here you go councillor mate; i know you're desperate to get your hands on one, and have been for some time... have one of my cast-offs... gratis..."

imagine that eh 8)

imagining it is about as close to it as you're gonna get by the way :x

Im not convinced about the cupboard clearance reason for them, as they were fitted to all vans through 68 and 69, unlike the extended door handles that were Westfalia fitment only it seems.

I get bored of emailing sellers in the US about long handles never to get replies .... maybe they remember 'WestyHandle Gate' :(

Ahhh... that makes sense! Thanks for the explaination Councillor.

I don't have any cupboards in my bus, so I will get a normal mirror instead, but I guess I shouldn't throw it away either then.

it was because of 'westy handle gate' that i came to realise that you were something more intriguing than just another bloke who used to post on just kampers who i'd met at vanfest 8)

i also found myself strangely attracted to phil oakey whilst watching a documentary on BBC4 the other night

so, to balance things up, i went down the pub, had a few lagers whilst watching the football, and threw a wheelie bin into the fowey on the way home.

*sorted*

crikey

a chance

without clements getting his hands on it

please PM me if you'd like to do a swap / sell your extended handle to somebody who is regularly ritually humiliated by a so-called friend in his attempts to get hold of one :p

Councillor, here's your chance! :) http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=11929" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
