I'm just trying to check the size of some steel rims but need to figure out how to measure the width and rim size.

Looking at the wheel with no tyre on do you measure edge to edge or from where the tyre tucks in the rim? I'm trying to figure out whether the wheels is 5 inches wide or 5.5 inches wide also is there a way of doing it with the tyre still on the rim? Same goes for the rim size - I believe they are 14 inchers but how do you measure it. Cheers in advance!

I can't tell you about just rims - unless it's stamped on it somewhere - but if it's still got the tire on surely the tire will tell you it's size? It certainly will the radius...

The diameter of the wheel is measured on the lip where to tyre bead sits. So a 14" wheel will measure bigger overall. The width is measured between the flanges that hold the tyre on. Surely the wheel has the size stamped into it around the bolt hole area. It will say something like 5J (5 inches) or 5.5J (5.5 inches) or just look on the tyre as has already been suggested.

Thanks - no tyres on and the wheels are pretty rusted so I just needed to check the logic - cheers
