I am sure I am going to answer my own question here. I have on my 1972 Crossover with one screw headlight rims, which retain the lense/main headlight. Today I took one of the rims off to investigate how much room is behind. There was some angled brackets attached to the inner rim. I take it that the brackets don't serve a purpose anymore as I have a superior retaining rim which would have been the three screw rims in the past. The bottom one has rusted and I didn't want to replace if there wasn't any need for it.

IIRC with the one screw headlamp rims the actual headlamp is screwed to the tabs in the headlamp bowl. The adjustment screws are also on the headlamp body. With the three screw chrome rims the headlamp is retained by the rim only with one screw, and the two other screws in the rim are the adjustment screws.
