Just want to know what you are running realy.

Im still on points and probably going to stick with that.
It conserns me that if electronic goes down on a journey, the only option is recovery.
My manager runs a classic and has electronic and reckons i should do the same.
I understand that if the dizzy shaft is worn then setting the points gap or dwell isnt going to be as accurate as a leccy set up but i prefer them.
I change mine (inc condenser) every couple of years and touch wood, havnt had a problem.

What you running?

Rich

Points for me. Just so simple and easy and reliable (Ive always had cars with points so its never been a problem for me I guess) :D (and as you say...if well maintained there is no problem with them....and easy to carry spares)

The amount of broken down vans I have stopped for over the years that have just had closed up points etc...usually vans that have had loads of dosh spent on them too....but they dont even carry a spare set of points lol....just as well I do...even in my Nissan Micra (just to help people out!)

Accuspark for me, super cheap on fleabay, took a gamble on the full kit . dizzy, coil, plugs, leads. works great. I wouldn't go back to points again.

Pertronix. Once fitted they don't fail.

Keep your old points and condenser in the van if you're worried. Sorted.

So its down to the make of kit then?
How long and how many miles has yours been running?

I've only ever had Pertronix I'm told the cheap Empi ones on eBay can be unreliable. I fitted Pertronix to my van as soon as I had it, 7 years ago now, not sure on miles but it's never failed and that includes four South of France trips and loads of other Euro visits along with everything else. I never even think about them :D

Still on points here. Never failed me. Change them about every 30,000 miles. Haven't needed to adjust them in ages.

I always stick a petronix on, never had one fail on me... The only prob ive seen is when people get the +/- mixed up and blow them.

Carry points as the spare?

I really struggled to set my last set of points, the power of the spring was actually bending the steel frame so when I removed the feeler guage the gap was to small. Probably rubbish quality points

i'm getting the empi accufire after a summer of rubbish points! chatting with Alan at GAC (http://www.vwracing.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) he suggested the empi unit as he finds the petronix units arent that accurate on advance.

either way most of the old car owners these days reckon point manufacturing quality is nothing like it used to be - apart from being chinese crap, the production runs are producing nothing like the quantities that used to be around in the 70's..

I've only ever had Pertronix - 7000+ miles later and still running sweet 8)

Always had points & to be fair I kept on top of them & they never failed me, however this summer I had my first trip to France so fitted the Petronix kit, starting up & running feels so much better than the points.
Think I'll go with the Petronix side of the fence :)

Ive had a few Bosch sets in the past that havnt been up to the job but have been crap when i took them out of the box. The plastic bit that contacts the dizzi spindle.
Problem is, if i went electric and it failed roadside itd be a nightmare changing back to points(it would probably be dark or raining or both).
I DO understand though that the most perfectly maintained Bus or any vehicle can stop at any time for any reason anyware for any reason.
Just wanted to know weather good regular maintenance or leccy is the way to go.
I also understand that some wont have the tools etc to do it and pentronick is probably the answer.

Petronix 2 for me after my points closed up half waf to Bretange last year Feels a lot better , I keep an old set of points and condenser in the bus just in case but I doubt I ever need them .

Quality bit of kit.

I had petronix and it failed on a major roundabout, I had to push the bus in tye dark off the roundabout. Very dangerous, so I'm still on points.

Agreed i ran Pertronix in my split for 5 yrs never had a problem

If you are really concerned about breaking down I guess you could carry round a complete dizzy with points as a spare? That would be easier to change in the dark and wet. You could leave the clamp on it so the timing would be set also.

Pertronix for me on both my engines, fit and forget about it. One less thing to check 8)

Electronic for me.

I've done 4000 miles since I've had the bus and not sure what the previous owner done but it's never let me down so far.

points and condenser, put new in on oil change and use old as spare coz they work.
too lazy to fit elecy modern magic really. ive heard loads love em and been ultra reliable.
may take the leap.

er no too lazy ill stick with what i got.
