I had one new in 1973 cost £26 I think
You could fit two on the saddle and if you both put your feet on the peddles and go for it you could go pretty quick but you have to watch the speed wobble

They are now fetching stupid money if its any help, MK1 & 11's are desirable, MK3's not so much from memory, lots of cheaper repro ones out there without the original shifter mech.

Know a bit too! :)
Hi Andy

:D Brilliant, I don't think I have a pic of me and my bike but if I did it would show me with a similar hair cut 8) my chopper was blue also and my mates was red, we used to get a couple of other mates and race round the local roads 2up on each

Depends what you need to know, My dad has about 5 Raleigh Choppers lol

(I'm currently trying to steal one for my westy so I can ride around on it at shows lol)

Was such a great bike for cruising the streets of my home town with my mates...and rode it to school too (hence the front rack). And the Mk1 was great due to the 'dangerous' handle barss....so cool for wheelies! :)

hia we have a 72 mk1

there are a few facebook sites that have some info. but not much on the web? mk1 and 2 are the ones to have. anything from £300 to £1200. this was £400 ish. its not mint by any stretch but safe and rides ok

this is a mk2 it has the bent bars down to the back wheel spindle, mk1 is straight. gear knob on a mk1 is round on a mk2 its the bar for a gear stick

ive found just normal condition is good as my boy does use them lots at shows.

I had a Blue MK1 purchased from the local Co-op for £35.00. They had a very rare Chrome (all over!) MK1 in our local bike shop "Carters" for £38. Mum & Dad couldn't stretch to that.......rare as HENS TEETH and would be worth a tidy sum now :!: Mine had the Squared off Back. My mates - 1 x Blue Round Back, 2 x Orange Round Back and one had a yellowish one with an extended back with a head rest! They were all MK1's. Absolutely loved it and went all over place on it - even to school. Gave it to my cousin some years later who let it rust to bits in the back garden :(

My question or confusion is that my bike was sprayed with rattle cans white, I picked the paint away & found space blue underneath so I'm going to respray her space blue, the sturmey rear hub has 1978 stamped on.
At the front I have a dyno hub, I know this has been added on at some point, my bike is deffo a Mk2, I asked a chopper trader at Busfest about the front hub & he says it's worth sommat if it's a Mk1 dyno, My dyno hub has 5 68 stamped on it??? I thought Mk1's started in 1969??
Confused lol

Andy

Morning! :D
The Dyno hub was probably not unique to Choppers so could have been produced prior to production starting. It could have been in a parts bin at the factory, and just made up into a Chopper style rim later?

Best place to get choppers for nothing is the tip! ive got 3 from there now and sold them all for a very handsome amount 8)

I smiled at an advert poster I saw at Busfest at the weekend, it was for a Raleigh Budgie, which is an infants Chopper sort of thing.
The wording was along the lines of -

'Small childs bike, but could be ridden by an adult'

Where else in life would that be a main selling point?

Ther was also a Raleigh Chipper (small) and Raleigh Tomahawk (Intermediate) bikes which were based on the Chopper design.

:msn4: :msn4: Ive got one surplus to requirements. Its been made up of parts collected as I went along. I do have the gear changer to but had removed it in this pick to replace the internal shifter pin. It also now has a dynamo front wheel to power the period front light. Frame has had a reweld near the front top tube but can be tidied up. £250 any good to anyone? (cost more than that to collect the parts)
