Hello,

I have just bought an 'early' deluxe rear bumper off eBay, i got it home and decided to offer it up and make sure it fitted before attacking it with the welder (its in real bad shape, worse than i thought).

When i came to offer it up the bumper irons/mounts are spaced wider than it should be, would this bumper originaly of come off a cross-over bay. If so are these the incorrect mounts?

any help would be great :)

Regards

mIKe

It may be a Splittie bumper as the fixing centres are further apart than a bay. We have a Splittie rear that fits in all respects except the fixing centres.

how can it be off a split if its got early bay deluxe trim?

here are the pics, just need to know if new mounts are required :)

OK I've just measured my bumper and it is approx 1000mm between centres. Also, the mounts I have do look a little different to yours, mine seem a little more slender oh and shinier :)

the ones on this bumper ar approx 1100mm apart! my girlfriends dad is restoring his bus but hes taken the mounts off and i dont know where they are, hes on holiday till tuesday do will compare the mounts then maybe. im going to have to repair the bumper anyway so moving the mounts isn't an issue, just need to know if they are thr right ones! at least i have the deluxe trim eh!

my bus is a '70 the mounts you posted above are different to the ones i have, mine seem to be original mounts as there is no evidence of them being moved and also they're rusted on. so im thinking this may be a crossover bumper? but that would mean the chassis was wider on a later bay (72)?! bit baffled by this and a bit annoyed i paid £80 and travelled 300+ miles for a rusty bumper thats in need of serious repair and doesn't fit.

It'll be for a 72.
72 Crossovers have the larger engine bay that takes the Type 4 engine so the mounts for the bumpers are slightly further apart (as well as the whole rear end being different rear corners, battery trays, rear valence, engine lid etc etc)

Shame you got shafted, have you tried getting your money back?

You could have got this cheaper

However I think these are a split bumper with the slash cut ends rather than the diamond ones and you'll need to cut the 4 tack welds holding the splitty mounts and drill the holes for the bay mounts. But the quality is alright and they don't look daft on a van. If its not going to be a concourse stocker I reckon its a better way to spend your money.

ive just compared it to a 71 bumper, its a slightly different bumper and the monunt holes are different so 72 seems to be what this is, im just going to repair this one, source some 'early' mounts and hopefully it will all come togather a treat :)

thanks for all the help dudes

i saw this and was going to buy it just for the trim but it looked a bit to much work to get it right.

one side is perfect, bit of alu-spray and it will be cool, the other side is a bit more tricky, going to have to patch it back together as the trim end has broken away and a new rubber is needed!
