Rear wheel bearings are shot on one of my rear hubs, had the bearings out and had a look at the numbers

Inner is 6207 made by SKF
Outer is N207E C3NA made by RKW

Both bearings are 72mm in diameter, 35mm bore and 17mm wide.

According to an article on the samba.com they should be

Rear wheels inner 211501287 6207 TNH.C3
Rear wheels outer 211501283 N 207 E.TN.C3..700435

So at least it has what it should in it.

Now my issue is I'm wary or cheap bearings and its a bugger of a job which I don't want to do too often. It seems most VW sellers only stock the Vtech bearing in the blue boxes or unbranded USA/Chinese/Brazilian bearings.

I have have found a web site called simplybearings ltd and narrowed it down to these

SKF inner which is pretty well priced at £6.99 plus vat

FAG outer which is very dear at £40 + vat!

Does anyone have any experience of the cheaper bearings? or know of anywhere cheaper to get proper german bearings from? or do I just bite the bullet for piece of mind

There is nothing wrong with SKF bearings i have just had some fitted to a new mixer which is holding a shaft they weighs 1.5 ton and will mix 5 ton of material. You won't have a problem with them as long the spec is right.

Only my suggestion ,from experience , if u can , check out if there is a bearing outlet in your area, like all they do is deal in bearings, u may find guys in such an enviroment will advise you without taking the mik /try to sellyou something ,thats what ive found anyway, and saved a fair few pounds too.

I've searched and can't find anyone local to be unless I'm looking in the wrong places

vw heritage do genuine . one is a standard bearing i think the other is a special

For the 8/70 onwards they do but for mine which is 3/70 I need the earlier ones

I phoned Heritage and they couldn't confirm a brand or country of origin so they could be anything??

If you stick the part number 211501283 into the Classic Part search it comes up as SECURING PARTS £69.92 ! from Germany

Take your old bearings to your local bearing suppliers they will sort you the same bearings from a good supplier at a fraction of the cost
Some places will even press them in for you

Ive took bearings from lawnmowers as well as vehicles in before and they have always sorted me out

What do you guys search for when looking for local bearing sellers? I've had no luck looking for someone, I'm on the border of North London/Herts and Essex

MAY be old hat way mate but i look in "yellow pages" failing that go to a private, non brand commercial car/vehicle garage and ask them who they know? or look up any engineering co/workshop in area ,they must know a bearing manuf./retail workshop, as other poster said, you may find u will save a wedge dealing with a bearing retail outlet, i certainly have, and they come with a stat. gauruntee<thou its not spelt like that< doh !

Dug out the Yellow pages and found a place a few miles away! Gonna shoot down there tomorrow lunch time. Fingers crossed :)

Great stuff let us know how you get on dude

Well that didn't go too well, the local firm had both bearings in stock (FAG & SKF), exactly the same as the ones I posted above from simplybearings, the inner one was £11.99 and the outer £65 !! (he told me they retail at £200 ?!?) I mentioned that they where £6.99 and £40.26 on simplybearings and he got a bit irate and started saying he wouldn't compete with two blokes in a warehouse with no overheads and the best price was £53 and £9 which was a couple of quid more then the simplybearings but at least I wouldn't have to wait so I agreed, to then be told its plus vat to which I walked. There is a limit to helping a local firm and then throwing money down the drain :(

Ordered them up from simplybearings £58.50 in vat and carriage compared to £74.40 from the local firm.

Bloody expensive bearings but with a 3000mile round trip to Spain planned I thought they would be worth the extra plus I read somewhere that the cheaper vetech bearings that come in the blue boxes have failed within 3K :(

assuming you want a reasonable product for your money ,mate, have u called GSF? i know they can/do get "bad press" from some peeps, as all Co."s do, but ,and i speak as a bus owner that runs a pretty much standard bus , i have found the parts they sell to be fit for (my)purpose, i have replaced my bearing with same from them and no probs ,so, may be worth a call?

I did speak to GSF and the only sold the Vetech bearings that I was weary of because of stories I'd heard maybe they used to sell better brands? But like I say with the millage planned with the van I wanted to get the best I could

Bearings arrived next day and where spot on, they where a perfect snug fit and tapped in fine, I remember another problem I had in the past with the Vetech bearings, they where very slightly over sized and I had to get a machine shop to hydraulic press them in.

Good bearing are "Reassuringly" expensive, I have a Hayabusa and refreshed the wheel bearings a couple of years ago when I had both the wheels powder coated. I bought some "budget" bearings and never gave it too much thought.

Last year the bike started chattering under braking, I pulled the front brakes off and could find nothing wrong, Its only when I took the bike off the stand I noticed movement in the front wheel spindle, the cheap bearing had collapsed and lost 4 or 5 balls...... I ride mostly two up with the wife and shudder at the thought of what could have happened.

I had checked these bearing less than a month previously.....

I will never skimp on this type of stuff ever again and SKF have an enviable reputation for a good reason ;)
