Recently my van has started running rough. It cannot run on tickover just cuts out. It starts first go as always but when you rev it it's lumpy and back fires. Also when you change gear the revs would stay high.

I'm running a 1600cc twin port and wondered if anyone has any ideas before i have to go through everything. Someone told me maybe the timing has gone out but i thought maybe it could be a fuel issue.

Help! :?

Sounds like you need a full tune up, plugs, points, valve clearances, timing, carb mixture, oil change etc.

What set up are you running carb and distributor? It sounds like the idle mixture set up is wrong, to rich would cause back fire on over run during gear change, any sticky throttle linkages or cable getting trapped, pedal return spring working ok?

Let me know what carb and dizzy you have.

Hi thanks for advise.

I'm am currently running a 009 dissy and a set of Kadron (solex carbs.)

I am under the impression that it's down to muck in the carbs, or they are sticking. will check this out during the week to see if it sorts it out.

I would start with the points. What is the gap? Once I'd got that sorted, I would ditch the 009 and go back to what VW fitted namely an SVDA dissy. Your engine will thank for it.

Just to say I found out the cause of the poor running I had with my van.

I found in the end the rubber pipe from the carb to the balance pipe to the second carb had come off. so a quick connection and re-set of the points and we are back cruising!

Now I can get my next car fixed.
