Scrap beam question...

Dear all,
At some stage I'm going to have to either replace my beam for a 'rust-free' import or replace the shock towers, so I wondered what happens to all those knackered beams out there?
How much should I expect to pay for a solid original beam? Also, how much for a knackered beam that I can repair myself?

Any thoughts...

I am picking up some beam plates tomorrow for Haveacamper & I's narrowed beam experiment, not sure when/if it will work out but will put some build up pics on here.

I'm pretty sure it's beyond repair, the shock towers look like Swiss cheese!!

I'll watch your experiment/thread with interest, ideally I'd like another beam to work on so I can still roll my bus to and fro'.

I'm going to have a go with this beam at some point.

The tubes are all sound, just the towers f*cked. If I get some time in the summer I may have a go then, got more important jobs to do first.

I think the going rate for a good beam is 200-300 quid, my mate replaced his with a red 9 one, it cost a bit more, but it really is a work of art :?: , thick torsion tubes and thick profiled towers, might be worth a thought

£185 for a complete (very) solid beam at the volksworld swap meet today including torsion leaves.

If my narrowed one does get completed in the near future my current one might be for sale (with adjusters already welded in).

Was a long time ago tho, have you still have those cookie cutters on the dining room table as well :shock:

On a cookie cutter related note(but a totally off thread one ), what type of wheel bolts are required to fit them? Haveacampers 2 piece late style porsche bolts fit the hole & seem to have the right radius but sit very proud of the bolt hole, are old style bolts lower profile ????

I've seen pic of beams being chopped and they cut them with a die grinder could you not use a pipe cutter or an exhaust cutting chain surly the cut would be more accurate., Frankie

When fitting endplates make sure the tubes are good where they pass through the shock towers,they sometimes get thin on the bottom tube

Yes i have to agree with 67 bay as ive seen a few 'scrap' beams being made into 4'' narrowed beams recently by Experts . Please Note you cant just make a beam in your garage , It has to aligned up before being welded and you need a good strong 200 amp welder . Also using a scrap beam if the bottom tubes are thin , Which they Nearly ALWAYS are on uk beams is YOU, TAKING your life in your hands . And possible your familys too .

Not to mention the fact that this major Axle component has to pass an MOT after . Just for the record a new set of Vw front axle bearings for a bus is £ 110 from just kampers . So when there worn and knackered before you take them out and then you damage them getting them in again Will they pass the mot ??? So then stick a set of adjusters in too, theres 210 quid and its not even on the bus . End plates are say 70 quid so then your up to 280 a new idler pin bush kit 300 ?????
