Hi Guys n gals,

very strange happenings in the stereo world of my bus!

I have pioneer head unit which ran 2 speakers up front, then i have a 2 sub speakers & tweeters run by a 400w edge amp, all off of a big o;l leisure battery.

Its been fine for years except i did change from an old pioneer amp as it kept cutting out and its worked great for months with this amp.

Anyway my new set up has started to do the following -

After a time, could be 2hours or 10 minutes the sound totally cuts from the speakers in the front and in the back and it just gives a really quiet muffled sound in the back? After about an hour it sometimes starts again, but then will either go for a while and then do the same thing or will do it immediately???

I have changed my head unit to a brand new pioneer unit and the same thing happens. its not the battery as the same thing happens on 3 different batteries i have tried (all fully charged)

Does it sound like the amp is maybe getting to hot and cutting the sound and this is somehow cutting all of the sound to the speakers in the front as well by feeding back up the cable (remote or sub leads)? or is it maybe i have the gain up to much (im sure i havent?)

The only thing i havent tried, which i will this weekend is to see if the sound in the front speakers comes back if i remove the wires going to the sub and the remote wire.

Any ideas what else could be checked. All the wires are in great condition and i have changed the fuse holder, fuse and split charge relay as well, plus all the wires have been upgraded to thick uns (i did this a couple of years before the issues and all was fine for the past year or so) earths checked etc?

Sooo any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated as its doing my swede in :x :(

I agree, it sounds like a problem with the amp. Quite possibly a capacitor (condenser).

Edit. Ps. It has to be fairly early on in the unit, like for instance in the power smoothing or supply since, if the fault were more toward the final or output stages, then the fault would affect only one channel I think.

When I had my pickup I ran 2 6x9's in the front with Pioneer head unit and amp.
Experienced same problems and turned out to be overheating in my case when playing loud.
Hope you get sorted. I bought a large heatsink and attached a 12v fan from a computer to cool it down.
Worked until I sold the van, then left the town so don't know if it is still going.

:D :D :D

Thanks chaps, i do have a feeling it will be overheating of the amp. i may just get a fan any way to cool it down.

In theory your amp will need air circulations or it will cook and cut out.
However I have never actually heard of anyone managing to do it :p
Questioning the positioning of my new amp now. Damn.

I have got a new amp and fuse holders etc and will be fitting a fan to cool it. Will report back when ive fitted it and used it for a long while! 8)

The amp is under my rock and roll bed, i have always had an amp there (some 15 years and its only started now) :?:

I've found different amps handle the heat better than others easiest thing to do would be to prop the bed up a little then running it what make of amp is it
