If an early bay has been fitted with a type 4 flat motor would it be possible to change it back to traditional set up, is it a straight bolt in job or would the body work have been cut and modified to change motor ? Or is it easy to change a type 4 tinware so it looks like a type 1 and move the alternator and air intake ?

the tinware is all different as is the engine hanger but all is doable and available, some crossovers are fitted with a 1700 type 4 engine as standard, no bodywork or chassis will have been cut to convert to type 4 if it wasn't original

Thats what I was concerned about, it just looks a different shape. What about the air intake, looks close to the road to me ? Is the back apron totally a different shape ?

don't get what you mean by air intake? none of the tinwear is the same you need the complete type 1 engine tin and some of it is "rare" for rare read expensive.

The rear support bar is completely different, to fit a T4 in an early bay t a new bar needs to be fabricated, the T4 engine mounts are quite soft and close to the middle of the engine (T4's have rubber between the engine and bar, T1 have mounts between the bar and body), in a late bay there a third mount at the flywheel end of the gearbox which stiffens it all up.

It should be possible to chnage back to a type T1 as long as the mounts which drop down from the chassis haven't been removed and altered although to fit A t4 IN WITH STOCK cooling the rear valence would need modifying.

Crossover's have a mounts the same as late bays so all the parts are available off the shelf to fit either.

Can't tell much from that pic, you really need to look at the rear support bar.

I can't think of any t4's I've with stock cooling, only converted to upright, I would image that they've had to chop about the rear valance to make it fit.

Also take a note of where the air intake sits, it need to be on the engine bay side of the tin otherwise you'll have overheating problems as the engine will be sucking in hot air that already been across the engine.
