Here is a question for u tech heads out there.

did westfalia change the dimensions of the headliner when the swapped from front hinged roof to rear hinged roof, as i have a front hinged in the '70 and it came with no headliner,. Managed to pick one up thanks to Trainspotter of here, but yep it does not fit ..

not his fault or mine.. if i line the front section up with the sunroof opening the forward part of it that should secure by the visors is approx 5-6" short, the boards have not been cut as they still have the shape to them.

did westys move the opening/ make it bigger????

the floor is yours!!!!

:? :? :? :? :? :? :?

oh and another annoying thing today..

front chassis cross member/outrigger on a '70 bloddy smaller than normal to.

bought one from schofields as mine was dented to hell in the bottom of it.

only to find theirs was 50mm bigger, spoke to them they have never come across this anominally before.

our cross member is only 24.5" wide normally 26".. but here is the best bit main heater tube schofields is slapbang in the middle at 13" mine nah 13" from offside.. this is from the factory as van has never been welded before as i removed the belly pans and protector/heatjacket around pipe..

now i have to heavily modify another panel,

why do i atract all the oddball vw's

I'm pretty sure the hole in the roof changed size for 73, which is before the rear hinged roof came along (the sunroof opening was used for early bays but not for late bays).

If you want it, I've got the original headliner from my 68 westfalia pop top. It's delaminating in many palces and isn't too pretty, but is OK to use as a template or if you want that ratty look.

As promised, here's the pictures of the headliner (if anyone wants it for free (rear hatch hinge cover not included) you just need to pick it up from Shrewsbury).

Front section:
423077.jpg

Width at front: 1262mm
Width at rear: 1312mm
Total length: 1128mm
Length to tip of horn (ie length of the side): 1068mm (ie bumps at front stick out 60mm further forwards than the horn at the side)
Sunroof opening width at rear: 930mm
Sunroof opening depth at rear: 37mm
Bump in sunroof opening should correspond with that in the roof.

Middle sections (only 2 obviously):
423074.jpg

Width: 191mm
Length: 977mm

Rear section:
423076.jpg

Width at front: 1292mm
Width at rear: 1265mm
Length: 1270mm
Sunroof opening width at front: 910mm
Sunroof opening depth at front: 71mm

Rear hatch hinge cover (as I said, this is possibly a 68 only when you have the cargo net??):

Hope this helps you out - If you need any more dimensions let me know.

That rear hinge cover picture is useful DP :)

I'm trying to fabricate that piece as the moment. I've ended up making a squared off version for now which doesnt have the curve in it.

What thickness is the ply? I've been using 1.5mm thick ply but found it too difficult to bend to such a tight radius.
Is there any additional support behind it to keep it bent to that shape?

What are the extra cut-outs for where it meets the roof? I'm guessing is it because its located behind the cross-member and not in front of it?

cheers

Here's the rear hinge cover in place - the rear bit of headliner obviously covers the cutouts:

My cover is 3mm thick, but I removed the top layer of wood as it was quite damaged and just re-finished the layer underneath (hence the knots) - I'd guess 4mm originally. The wood keeps its shape fine on its own. There are three brackets that hold it in place, as well as being screwed in along the rear edge. Here's the brackets:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that DP. Good work with the pics :)

I have a 69 westy interior minus all the panels and headlining (my bus is a kombi), so I'm starting from scratch on all those bits. Most of it should be fitted this weekend and that hinge cover is the only bit I had my doubts about.

Ego to bend it youll need to knock yourself up a steamer and get it well soft and pliable.....then use a basic jig to hold its shape whilst it cools and dries out.....

Cheers Aaron - I thought I might end up having to steam it.
That's another job to add to this weekend's list
