What ever happened to just flying off on a spur of the moment trip :?:. My kids are going to stay with there grandparents in Spain in the summer giving us two weeks of child free bliss 8) ive been trying to plan a summer trip through north Devon, North Cornwall than hoping across to the South and back up to Wilts all within a 10 day slot and stopping off at different sites on the way.
After contacting loads of sites it seems that most are booked full already or want a 3 night minimum stay , I did'nt think it would be so hard find a cheapish no frills site to stay at for a night, im starting to think it would be cheaper and easier to tour europe :D If anyone has a space in a field with a toilet let me know :D
.
just needed a quick rant ;)

I reckon everyone is staying put in UK this year, hence the difficulty. Eurostar is unreliable, volcano activity, strikes etc... on the plus side, you could probably get a cheap holiday abroad! :D

Really? 3 nights? Jeez, there must be something about, surely. You tried all the ones listed in camping.
Failing that, the caravan using native travellers always find a verge, car park, school field to camp on

Think you have a good point there. Perhaps i should be looking for a shire horse and cart, you could stay anywhere for free  As for the 3 night thing, a lot of sites dont like one nighters because it stops the week long stayers booking the pitch

jump on the ferry and come over here. there are loads of fields and the whole island is your toilet.

we have the best pubs thats why they export them all over the world. :D

Hi!

Before we moved to Devon, (lived in Northampton) we took out about a week or so touring Devon and Cornwall, the first night was planned, as we were off to a VW show and had camping, the rest was just winging it, places we liked the sound of, just camped up somewhere quiet, and went to a proper sitte every other day, to have a nice hot shower. We had a AA camping and caravan book, and just used maps and sat nav to find local sites in the area, and just rang up, told them, we dont need a specific pitch per se, just a spot to park, and use the shower in the morning, all we didn't have any bother at all, though it wasn't high season, quite a few place were busy, maybe we were lucky, did around 1500 miles round trip around Devon, Cornwall and back to Northampton.

Good luck!

Cheers!

Alistair

The Emarald Isle is always a good bet, or just get on a ferry to France, loads of campsites, get up into Brittany or anywhere really. Always campsites, always villages, so bars, restaurants, shops etc. Always a laugh in my experience.

Just get in and drive. When you need 'funny money', that is the start of the adventure!

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi!

Funnily enough that's what we were thinking of doing this year, any suggestions? It seems such a long bloody way from Devon!

Cheers!

Its 3 hours from where chippi is and about 4 hours to Fishguard from where you are Alistair so i guess its a fair trot. Ferry goes to Rosslare.

I would head down around the bottom to Tramore and on to Cobh/Kinsale (Titanics last port before it sank) and over to Dingle Penninsula/Inch strand, amazing beaches, best surfing in europe and camping isn't bad you can pretty much camp where you want within reason there arent many cops to enforce it and there is a history of travellers around those parts. If you go up a little your in 'Quiet Man' country Connemara which is rugged and beautiful and about 3 national parks on the way.

We camped pretty much where ever we wanted and were right down on the beach at Inch, spent the week surfing there and got really lucky with the swells. We drove down from Ballycastle on the north coast (wifes home) pretty much top to bottom of the island and it took 11 hours  . The road infrastructure is amazing now with most of the roads/motorways brand new and just completed so i think it would be much easier to get there fast.

Chippi, if you are feeling a bit adventurous, then give http://www.wildcamping.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; a try. Basically full of info on sites you can stay at for free within the Uk :msn4:

All morning phoning around and we managed to make some progress today and booked a few sights, as mentioned i have done France (Poole to St Malo) in the summer before and the beaches are stunning and quiet as well i willl be going back some time soon in the bus.

This is a pic of the beach at St Cast le Guildo in Brittany 2007 and at the height of the summer hols ;) stunning

Sounds really nice, will add it too our plans once we decide where to go!

A lot of sites wont book you for one nighters in advance, and in France you cant (usually) prebook for less than a week, but usually if you rock up theyll get you on ... if they have a space, they'll want it filled. :)
