here's the question,i live in hereford and looking to go to the gower coast :) in a 1600tp westy poptop but unsure of history of engine so do you A: GO via M50 and M4 round Cardiff and Swansea :?
..... B: Go via Merthyr Tydfil and heads of the valleys..(up hill most of the way) :?
...or C: Go Brecon,Sennybridge, Llandovery and in from the back trying to cut out the hills??
shall be towing a trailer with awning in and usual windbreaks and stuff. 8)
engine has been serviced and valve clearances checked,oh and a fully fledged member of AA to boot.

If it were you which route takes your fancy?? :? :?

regards.

B Looking at the map Merthyr to Neath then Swansea then on to the Gower but I don't know the roads, but to be honest my Bus is pretty strong even with a trailer,& it would be an adventure.
It's easy for me M4 all the way although last time I did the Gower it was murder going through Swansea, it was worth it though when we got to Three Cliffs campsite, what a view. :D
I think we need some help from our Welsh Buddies. :D

my main concern is merthyr is hills all the way and worried might over cook the engine......
that said went to vanfest last year and had to do a standing hill start coming up the backside of british camp from ledbury and got into third doing eventually 30mph uphill but felt really sorry for the old girl after, you know pride n joy etc. :p

Calling all welsh peeps..... is there an easier route????

it will cruise at 50mph ok so thinking M4 or Brecon.

help please.......

Yeah kinda quest that, the M4 route would be more ecomnomical too some say it could be £2 a litre  by the summer
I think I'll be cruzin at 50mph instead of 60mph if that happens.

looking at nicolaston farm on the gower, you been??? :? or do you know of better site :?: two kids and a cairn in tow along with the ayoltollah so a really convenient beach and sand dunes would be nice, not fussed on clubhouse but would like hook up..any thoughts

regards.

Been looking at that site looks good not stayed there myself, I can recommend Three Cliffs Bay never stayed anywhere with such fantastic views they have hookup but you would have to book Dog's are no problem anywhere on the Gower that's why we like it we have two Terriers( Backwell,Patterdale).
As for my Bus it's stock with a A/D TP engine 34pict don't know what's wrong with it, it'll do 65 all day long with a trailer on the back  & still return 27mpg on along run.

the local girl says route C.

Ems is from Brecon and says the road is usually nice and quiet, was largely built by the military and is a good compromise between hills and main roads.

plus the drive is nicer.

and as far as easier routes go, the answer is no.

three cliffs bay...is it too quiet and does it have access to beaches or do you ned to drive :?: what sort of pitch fees :? nicolaston is 25 notes per night with lecy hook up
as for putting up a poll to be fair the only poles i can usually do on here is one with the awning    me and tech, not the best of friends  but once shown usually ofay with it,hell managed to get me cal import thru mot by me self bar a new bat tray n seat belt points (see thread on resto ref valerie)
open to suggestions.

sharky. 8)

3 Cliffs is the same £25 all in +20p for a shower. All of the Gower is pretty quiet maybe Port Enyon is rockin a bit.
There's two paths to the Beach at 3 cliffs the short one which is pretty scarry or the long one which we managed with our 70 year old Mother in law :p what ever route you take it more than makes up for it. 8)
All this talk is making me wonna come. :(

well you know what they say......the 7 p's has got alot to do with it  just putting some ideas out there, defo do gower looking (missus n diamonds permitting :? ) to get down easter weekend :shock:eek:r it will be early june for sure as a taster ready for summer 8) 8)

Option C without a doubt. Not a great fan of the Heads of he Valley road!! I don't like the game of Chicken you play on some of the 3 lane roads. The Gower is great but take a wind break .. Especially if you end up at llangennith!! :)

mmmmm,looks like were all tied,some for a/b and c.
thought of another way what do you think :?:
hereford to brecon round the back to libanus and onto the back of pen-y-ffan then drop over past ystrafeldt spelt wrong i know :? then does that road not take you onto neath?
possibly cutting out most hills and comes out roughly by gower???
i might be wrong though
who's up for route D

Bugger the routes let's have some pic's then

Three Cliffs Bay taken in mid August, note no crowds of peeps. & sunshine not like Cornwall in the last 5 years. :(

DSCN0491.jpg

Taken from the other side.

NICE TO SEE SOME PICS BRETT :D AS YET NOT BOOKED NICOLASTON FARM OR THREE CLIFFS FOR OUR FIRST TRIP OUT.
WAS GONNA TRY FOR EASTER WEEKEND BUT NIC FM HAS NO SPACE TIL EAST' SUN' AND BACK WORKING TUES' SO LOOKING EARLY JUNE NOW FOR SURE PROBABLY WEEKEND 0F 9th LEST WE CAN GET DOWN THERE IN MAY FUNDS PERMMITTING.
AS FOR ROUTE QUITE LIKE BRECON THEN ROUND TO PEN-Y-FFAN AND ONTO NEATH THAT WAY 8) THINK SENNYBRIDGE AND LLANDOVERY TAKES ME TO FAR OUT ME WAY TO BE FAIR.
OTHERWISE IT WILL BE M4 CORRIDOR.
EITHER WAY WILL TAKE LOADS A PICS TO SHOW OFF ME VAN AFTER RESTO. :D :D
HOPEFULLY NOT ON THE BACK OF AA WAGON
SHARKY.

Hi there,I live in the Swansea vallys and camp down in the gower a few times a year and always stay at nicholston farm as it has all the facilities you will need , friendly staff and the shower blocks are clean. There is a path at the bottom of the campsite that leads you over the dunes a to a very quiet beach.
As for getting there , when I travel to Malvern I always use the heads of the vallys fully loaded , wife n 2 kids the van has no probs 1600 to un modified
But if you have the time go via Brecon as its a nicer drive and there is a lovely cheap campsite on the way next to a river which is 12 a night, well worth a stay.
On one of my post there is a few pics of the vans at nicholston farm.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Swansea home of wales's only premiership football team ;)

My wife just pointed out the campsite in Brecon was only 6 pound a night

Sharky,

If I were you I'd go for route "B". Travelling down the M4 via Cardiff and Swansea is a little sterile. I use to have a wench in Merthy and use to travel along the heads of the Vally roads - its very green and even on a wet day (364 of of 365) it's very relaxing. There is a bugger of a hill getting in or out of Merthy, but its not that bad  #

If you are heading for the Gower, do a de-tour and pay Carmarthen a visit. There are some great trips around there. I spent many a "summer" in the Gower, still developed trench foot and haemorrhoids

Enjoy yourself.
