    Cheap and cheerful

With much trepidation I cut a cruciform into the middle of the brand new headlining to let it hang down whilst I cut a big hole in the roof Then the roof Fortunately I had a real westy parked next to it, so was able to make cardboard templates to locate the hinge fixing holes, which was...

    Cheap and cheerful

So, after waiting for ages for the engine to be fitted, we finally had it running, and my "expert" tells me it sounds good. Then I had the brake servo repaired twice, a new master cylinder and then a complete replacement servo and mc from another of my buses and it still was not right...

Today i sold my camper, and i have never even used it!! Young couple from Argentina walked in off the street, want to use it to drive from here (Joburg) to Mozambique, then up to Mombasa and ship it to India! Very brave. was in the bar at Donnington Park years ago and spent some time talking to George Harrison and Barry Sheen! Unfortunately my heroes were John Lennon and Mike Hailwood :( But I never let on. ;)

Westy pop top hinges location please!

Excellent link as I am about to do the same with my crossover. Another point, the rear supports are located on the edge of the sunshine roof aperture on a real Westy, which is about 5cm below the roof line so the canvas will have to be adjusted to suit I think :?

    Cheap and cheerful

Carrying on with the interior, I have decided to go for the retro look, with colour coordinated tartan. And I have found a lovely period radio, with 6 short wave bands, ideal for listening to the BBC World Service, and it actually works!! Now for a complete change, I bought a genuine...

    Cheap and cheerful

As my bus is based on an early deluxe ii has the waistline moulding but unfortunately the 2 rear corner pieces have been lost over the years. As they seem to be made from unobtainium I decided to make some. I cut 3 strips of very thin ply to size which I then glued and fixed to the side to...

I was offered an upgrade to a re-worked Golf dizzy, which has a hall sensor, for 80 pounds by our local VW specialist. Any feedback on this, is it going to make a difference? WDYT?

    Cheap and cheerful

Now it is time to start playing with the interior. I have looked at many brochures etc, and decided a swing out kitchen a la Devon would be the thing, and a three quarter bed, so as to give lots of storage, First thing was to make a template for the contour of the rear. I screwed together 4...

    Cheap and cheerful

I was visiting my home town of Ramsgate on Sunday, over from Johannesburg for a few days. In the 60s when I was a kid it was the main port for VW, and the brand new buses and beetles used to be driven on trade plates through the town to the depot near Manston airport. The drivers drove them flat...

    Cheap and cheerful

I collected the combi from the paint shop, looking very shiny. In fact too shiny in my view, and with a few paint blemishes. Anyway UV the painter said bring it back when it is all assembled and he will flat and polish it and remedy any faults. I had labelled the bumpers and air intake to be...
