    Crossover should be post 71 with the relays under the fusebox. Pre 71 had them mounted separately under the dash.

    It depends on which fuse box you have? as it is a 12 row fusebox there are pre 71 and post 71 versions

    The simple answer the van has been wired up wrong, the ignition feed to the coil is going through a fuse which it shouldn't hence the engine stopping when the generator stops charging.

    Depends on which year it is? Very early just had a weighted flap but only had a small pre heater hose. Then the flap was operated by a cable from the thermostat flaps with the larger pre heater hose. The went onto the wax capsule operated flap finally the vacuum operated flaps. There should be a...

    The switches are wired in tandem, one switch fails you won't notice until the other one fails.

    Is the shaft nylon bush correctly fitted, the hole in the bush and sleeve must line up with the retaining bolt, otherwise you can get excessive sideways shaft movement. Beetle shafts are smaller.

    You have a short somewhere on the wires to the indicator lamps no magic cure, you have to trace the wiring through, and why have you a 30A fuse for the hazards?

    Battery recomendations

    You don't need anything fancy like an AGM battery. The charging system is basic and more suited to standard batteries. Varta, Banner, Exide, Lucas are quality makes. Bosch are rebadged Varta, Halfords rebadged Lucas have the benefit of warranty replacement at any Halfords store if needed.
