    EARZ

Oh whoops :) Only just spotted this mod edit because this thread was linked to. My comment was a tongue in cheek about "political correctness". Doubting the validity of a Cairo taxi drivers understanding of airflow and thermo dynamics might be fuel for the PC extremists

    Dormobile help needed - again!

The brackets sound like the ones the handle straps fit to on the seat. One on the front left side of the seat base (closest to the sliding door) and the other on the middle of the rear edge of the base. These fit to the wood before the seat cloth and the handles screw to them over the cloth...

Leaking oil out of breather pipe

It's a valve that controls the breather pipe air flow into the case. It prevents oil mist exiting behind the pulley.

Anyone got a coil for sale in Plymouth/exeter area

If your not worried about the look then any 12 volt ignition coil will work fine.

Leaking oil out of breather pipe

    Well there's your problem then :lol: http://www.justkampers.com/vw-t2-bay-parties-d-une-fen-tre/t2-bay-moteur/oil-system-lubrifiants/253-260-180-rubber-boot-for-the-oil-breather-vw-beetle-1961-on-vw-t2-bay-1600cc-1961-1979.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Leaking oil out of breather pipe

Two things to check. Firstly make sure the pipe from the oil filler is connected to the air cleaner and that it is not obstructed. Next check the rubber "beak" is fitted to the bottom of the the metal tube, under the tinware - and that it has not gone hard with age.

    1600 Twinport Tune up question

These carbs were tetchy back in the day. One trick we used to find worked well was to change the idle jet for the one out of a 1303s beetle which was one size larger. Before doing this you could try giving the mixture screw another eighth to quarter turn anti clockwise (out) to richen it a tad...

    Bench testing a generator

Connect up to your battery charger. If it slowly spins it's good. (Don't do it for long or it may overload the charger).

    Dormobile wiring

Glad to hear you got it working. Yes you are right, the bi metallic strip flasher unit should be ignition fed whilst the interior strip light should be live all the time. Sounds like a PO got the wires swapped around at some stage.

    Fuel tank sender unit

I thought I was going to have to do this job too :( Whilst touring Corsica this in May I found the fuel gauge was reading low but occasionally it was correct. With great prescience of mind I fiddled under the dash and found I could make it react. Turned out the spade terminal on the fuel gauge...

Servo pipes, where do they go?

The breather pipe originally went into a hole in the body. If you don't have this then run the pipe up, away from any possible water ingress and fit a small filter on the end to keep dust out.

    1971 bay different bearing failure

A failed diff bearing will make a lot of noise. Do you mean the drive flange? They are supposed to move. Get an expert opinion before condemning the gearbox.

    Please help engine wont idle

Assuming it's a stock carb. Check the fuel cutoff solenoid is working. If that checks out as OK then remove and clean the idle jet (accessed from the right side of the carb)

    Fitting after market rev counter

From memory I think the pos goes to the points side of the coil and the neg goes to earth. If there is a bulb for night lighting, it's wire will of course connect the the dash lighting.

    Gearbox change question

Depends on what box you have. For a 1600 you need the standard box, not the mountain ratio. If you want longer gears such as those fitted to 1800 and 2 liter busses then you will need more power or you will spend a lot of time in third gear. To get slightly longer gearing the easiest way is to...

    Dormobile wiring

By the way, the original was also way too bright. Fine if you need to take out somebodies appendix but for camping it was a truly hideous amount of light.

    Dormobile wiring

The original has twin tubes and a similar switch but was a little longer / narrower. Both the short end cap and the larger cap covering the transformer with the switch in it, were metal and painted national health beige in 71. That said many got broken and replaced and it's likely Dormobile...

    Dormobile wiring

The warning light is ignition fed where as the interior strip light needs to work all the time. So they will not share a common power supply. The original lights are not made but there are plenty of strip lights the same size and they look better than the original - for example :-...

You got me there. Mine only has one violet wire.

Standard alternator belt size too long

Ah! The VW bottom pulley came in two different sizes. To start with they were the same as the beetle, then they introduced a slightly larger one for transporter engines.
