why did you buy your bus ?

Same-ish here! With no room, no time and another project well underway, I really didn't need my '68. But I never had a panel van and this one was in decent shape for having spent so many year in Canada. I look forward to the days when I can work on it ... soon to be on the road again :D

What did you do with your early bay today

With a thorough run through of the electrical on my 68, I can finally stop cursing the PO and his :x "handywork." It seems at one time the flasher and signal relays were replaced with a late bay switches, relays and even partial wiring harness ... what a flippin mess under the dash! It took me...

    Seat belts

    I've heard good things about these from North America. I will be ordering some this weekend including a lap belt for a third person on my front bench seat. http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C45%2D3P%2DAF%2DPAIR" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

    Front Number Plate Bracket Options

North American plates are mounted to those holes in your bumper ... but not directly. Google image "vw license plate bracket" and you will see the standard bracket that has the holes four inches apart with a horizontal bar that has a the holes for the license plate bolts.

    newb question firewall missing?

I put one in my 68 this year when I had the engine out for a rebuild. There's two styles ... actually three to be exact. Late bay firewalls won't fit. There are two style of earlybay firewalls ... you want the one that has identical top corners. The 71 earlybay will fit with some massaging in...

bike rides with a 3 year old

I agree 100%. Many miles of fun were had with a Trail Gator and our bikes when my son a little guy! I'd send it to you for free if shipping wasn't so expensive from Canada. Not sure why I still have it ... good memories I guess.

    Timing advice ..

Haha nope. In the 70's four Canadian downhill ski members were so daring that they were named the "Crazy Canucks" and since then many Canadians identify with the Canuck term ... crazy or not

Help - Diagnosing fuel Gauge prob

I had a similar issue and fortunately I already had the engine out for a rebuild so finding the loose ground near the tank was easy. Today I topped off the tank and the gauge reads fine now. Good luck.

    VW badge application

3M makes a double sided tape for exactly that. Peal off one of the paper backing, apply the tape to the back of your badge, delicately trim the excess away, CAREFULLY locate and mark your bus for the EXACT badge location, remove the other paper backing, apply the badge, remove any layout guides...

    Securing roofrack

I've never heard of security screws. What are they? Do you have a close up pic? Also ... I'm considering an anti-theft device for my bus and really like the high visibility of your wheel clamp/lock.

Rear bump stops - do I cut?

Cut off one. If you find that it's not enough they are easy enough to remove to cut off a second. Make sure that your shocks are not compressing fully before you bottom out on the bump stops ... otherwise you will be damaging your shocks.
