EB clutch operating shaft bush - obsolete???

What is the O.D /I.D? May be the same as the bug. We have various silicon/bronze ones at work, and I will check.

    Window Rubber Replacing

Genuine VW are very good as are West Coast Metric. I tried to squeeze a (non VW)German front screen seal (expensive from KK, after a very crappy cheaper Brazilian one from Heritage) into my bug. The German one was too thick and had to be pounded on to get it in, resulting in laminate separation...

Get the Bentley manual for your bus! It covers all this in detail. Al

    Sunroof headliner ATTN SUNROOF EXPERTS!

That is the closing panel for the sunroof that hides all the mounting bits and reduces noise. It should have roof bows attached and the headliner fits the same as on the main roof. The panel clips to the sunroof steel outer panel with plastic clips. Get some vinyl from Martrim to match the...

    what size tyres???

You might want to check the 'Tire Sticky' on http://www.thesamba.com to avoid problems. 185R14 was, I believe, 185/80/14 so check with care. Also check the tyre weight rating. You should NOT be running car tyres on a vehicle that does not specify them. You may get away with it, but the downside...

    Gearbox ratios

Yes, I work at Gene Berg. We use a cut-away trans as a test fixture for the gear stacks etc. I had always heard that a VW trans was not for the inexperienced, and would confirm this from watching our trans builder at work. I will shortly be going through my bug 5 speed that has sat idle for...

    fitting servo to early bay

What size are the Ferrari discs, and what wheels does he run to clear the disc/caliper? Also, very interested in the remote servo as the one in my '71 has died and I believe they are expensive to repair/replace. Al

    Gearbox ratios

Check out Gene Berg in the not too distant future. The Berg 5 Bus Box for bugs has been rolled out. The next step is to figure out the nose cone configuration for bus application. It will enable you to spread your gearing out more. Probably not for a 1600cc motor as the kit will be $1500-$2000.

    Sandblasting

If using sand then you must wear a good mask. Silicosis can result if not. Not nice. Also cover everything you don't want sand in with masking tape. It goes everywhere, and you will be pulling it out of orifices for days! And be prepared for some holes when done. Best way for quick rust...

Touareg brakes on a '71 bay?

Has anyone done this? I have access to a cheap set of Brembo big discs (330 or 350mm) and 6 pot calipers from a V8 Touareg. I imagine 17" rims are a must. Al

    Gearbox oil

Make sure it is GL4 rated, and NOT GL5. GL5 will eat your synchro rings. GL4 is getting harder to find. Al

    HELP WITH HEADLINING!!!

I did my bug one by taking the old one apart and marking the stitch lines on fresh vinyl. Got my friend to run it through the sewing machine. Fits like factory after a little stretching/glueing. I have struggled with TMI etc before with no luck. Pattern is poor (missing bow), material not the...

    disc brake conversion

288mm would be Audi A4 or Passat 1997 up probably. 46mm tall for use with ATE calipers. The only other 288mm discs I saw were 25 ish mm tall. Not badly priced either. Are those yellow calipers in the pic ATE? Any ideas on what rears fit a bay best?

Torsion arms, steering knuckle - paint?

Check out Eastwood. They do a very nice chassis black and a brake drum epoxy black. Hard as nails.

Does anyone know what discs they use, size, and what wheel size is needed to clear the set-up??

    Steel sunroof help!

I believe CIP1 in the States does the cables & mechanism for the bus. I seem to recall $159, but not sure if that was for a pair or one. WCM and other suppliers do the seal, but it's not cheep. When I see what mine should look like I will search for a generic piece to fit the hole. Al

    Genuine Bosch 009?

German Bosch is considered the best, and comands a higher price. Brazil Bosch used to be cheap, but I saw NOS ones at the Vegas Bug In for $150. They have a different advance curve to the German Bosch ones, and different total advance. I was given a sample copy made by some local Indians, and...

    Oil Cooler Kits

On the filter front don't go for the cheapest option unless you want problems. What about one of the Bus ones from the type 4 as an alternative? These are very similar to the ones supplied on the late F.I mexican bugs, but the part number on the mex ones is the same as a euro golf, but the...

    Oil Cooler Kits

If you feel you really have to have a cooler then fit it properly in a full flow system and have the case machined to return the oil. The factory oil pressure relief valves are there for a reason and not to be messed with. Think, if it was OK to do this why didn't VW just miss them out and save...

    cooling on a 1641

Just buying new parts does not guarantee they are to VW specs. I have seen Mahle and the Chinese nikki p/c's that are out of round/spec. We just rejected 9 out of 10 factory VW engine cases as the crank/cam tunnels were machined off line; oil galley to oil pump holes sometimes don't line up. The...
