1967 Bay Window Panel Van
Price now £6400 ono
After quite a bit of deliberation, i`ve decided to sell my bay panel van.
This is an awesome looking van - it was built on 15th Nov 1967 making it one of the earliest bay panels in the UK. Being a 68 model, it has all the one year only features inc push button handles etc.
The best thing about this van though is that it has absolutely zero rust - its spent the last 20 years sat in Nevada, desert country. It was used as an adverting hoarding at the side of the road hence the original signwriting on the side with pointing across the road to Western VW in Las Vegas.
When i bought the van late last year, it was basically a rolling shell on wheels - alot of items had been thieved off it as it was sat at the side of the road for so long! This means that all the suspension, brakes, running gear, electrics - well basically everything on the van(!) has been either renewed with brand new items or good second hand items been sourced.
Just a summary of items that have been bought for it are -
2nd hand 1600 engine completely serviced and all seals renewed
1600 transmission and mounts
All rubber seals through the van
68 only chrome handle set - eg rear hatch, slider, cab doors and ignition all on one key.
Recon steering box
Ball Joints
Steering Joints
Steering Idle Pin
Shocks
Adjusters on front beam
Wheels and very good tyres
Driveshafts and CV joints
Starter
68 only Reflectors
UK Spec Headlamps
Indicators
US only Working Reversing Lights
US Red Lights (flashing amber)
68 only Master Cylinder
Brake Cylinders all round
Front wheel bearings
68 only Wiper Arms and blades
Stock NOS Exhaust
Inertia Seat belts and lap belt for Bench Seat
Side Mirrors
68 only Rear View MIrror
Steering Wheel
Speedo and cable
Gearshift bushes and coupling
Electric washers
The engine is a 1600 twinpoint which pulls well and has had all the seals and ignition items renewed along with a fresh coat of paint. The gear box is a 2nd hand unit - goes into gear well with out any popping out and the synchro is fine. It whines a bit on 4th but is fine otherwise.
A recon steering box has been fitted and with all new ball joints, idle pin, steering drag link and tie rods steers well. At the moment it is still a bit stiff as i havent done enough miles to loosen it up yet!
The outside of the van is something you just cannot manufacture. It has sat for years in the desert and the paint has a fantastic patina about it. There are odd dents around the van but it just simply adds to the character. The rear arches have been cut out slightly to accomodate larger wheels that it must have ran at some point. They aren`t rusted or anything, but the edges have just been folded back. It wouldn`t take much to get this repaired to a proper lip if you wanted to get this done. The only welding that has been done is the rear battery tray where oddly enough, it wasn`t rusty, but had been cut out (!!?) and the engine lid hinge panel had been dented in too much to pull out and a new one of these was welded in allowing me to fit the engine lid.
Inside the van cargo area looks like new all in original paint. There is a bit of carpet glue which i`m sure could be removed. The cab floors are all original too - i have painted the drivers side floor as the paint had come off at some point. The cab steps are in great condition and the cab doors which are 68 only are in mint condition.
All new seals from heritage have been fitted on the cab doors, slider, windows and engine lid. For some reason, i never got round to fitting one to the rear hatch though. This means the van is nice and dry inside and doesn`t leak water in. I haven`t fitted door cards to the cab doors as i thought i`d leave that up to the new owners choice. I have fitted plastic liners though so water doesn`t leak in.
The first thing i did when i got the van was to fill all the cavitys with cavity wax - it was literally pouring out of the bottom drain holes so they are well catered for. I also undersealed the whole van too.
Underneath, the van is pristine - even the MOT man who obviously didn`t like old vans (!) remarked on how clean it was underneath - wouldn`t expect any less considering the climate it came from.
To get the van in this state has taken over 200 hours of my own labour so you can appreciate the amount of work that has gone it to it to get it UK road legal. Its all registered and MOT`d - it only failed the mot first time on wipers not effective and the steering drag arm which were both replaced for new.
This is a great van and ready for the summer. Its a blank canvas really - you could run it as a van like me or kit it our for camping!
