Due to an recurrence of a longstanding health issue, I am reluctantly having to sell my 71 US import Westy. I bought the bus in December 2010 from a well known T2 specialist based on the following text:
"This van is a great base for a restoration project. It is a pop-top westfalia, the roof is not fixed to the van and is missing one upright, but the hinges are there. The van has a considerable dent in the rear right corner, for which there is also a repair section to go with the van for the damaged area. The remainder of the van is in good shape with only a few dents here and there. The van looks to have been painted once before on the rear panel behind the slider, the rest looks to be original paint. The cab floors are in fair condition, they will need some attention to clean up surface rust on the drivers side and one 50p sized hole on the passengers side. It will need a battery tray on the right side, the left side tray is in mint condition. Both outer sills are peppered but this is only in the outer sills, the inner ones are perfect, as is the rest of the underside and chassis which will need no welding. The beam is completely solid and has a servo fitted to aid the brakes.
The van will need a new screen as the current one is broken, the 3/4 width rock and roll bed and an upright closet are present as are a pair of front seats that will need recovering. It will need a new wiring loom as the one in it has shorted out and most of the wires are fried, original spec VW looms are available for this year of van.
The front bumper is present but there is no rear bumper or brackets. Also included is a rear valance. The van has no engine but does have a gearbox and drive shafts.
Overall this is a great affordable base for a project to either just get on the road and run it around as is or bring it back to life properly.
All import duties have been paid and all relevant paperwork will be supplied with the van to register."
Since purchasing, the bus has had two new sills, a battery tray and a small footwell repair carried out by Streetstylebodyshop in Bolton (photos to substantiate) and in excess of a thousand pounds spent on parts which include:
Pop top canvas and full seal kit
New windscreen and seal
Replacement Hella headlights
Replacement tail lights/lenses
Replacement front indicators
Replacement reversing light
New TMI 04 beige front seat covers
Various new seals for door handles etc
Replacement pop top bed
Front cot (immaculate)
And a new wiring loom from Volksgoods which will be ready in July 2011.
Overall this is an relatively straightforward rebuild which could be made road legal and driven about rat look style reasonably quickly.
I am only looking for what I have spent so asking £5000 and copies of expenditure are available.
Viewing is in Skelmersdale, Lancs and I can be contacted by PM.
