1968 Early Bay 1600 twin-port

Originally from Chicago, I’ve had ‘The DreamCatcher’ here in the UK since 2012. A never ending project, but a pleasure to live with. I’ve moved on to something a little younger than ‘Dreamy’ so she has been sitting out in the cold for about a year now. It’s hard to see her go but she deserves someone’s attention.

57 yr old now she's MOT and Tax exempt.
Starts (with a spray of easy start), and runs pretty well. Good enough she can be driven. Last time on the road, around late 2023, she was working well enough to be on the road. November 2024 I drove her only in first gear a few hundred yards to get her cleaned: the brakes were barely there, though the handbrake worked. A clean would probably save them but I wouldn’t recommend driving it from here.
A couple lights don’t work either but I’m sure they’re an easy fix. I would recommend that she is picked up by trailer.

1600 twin port engine with electronic ignition.
Pretty much new tyres with good tread, plus spare.

The body has a lot of rust around the bottom edges, but as far as I can tell it’s just cosmetic.
Underneath looks alright. I can’t see anything serious. I have replaced the jacking points in this before, and the sills, and the floor, and the battery trays...

The interior was created by myself over the years. Storage in usual places.

I’ve installed a rock-‘n’-roll bed which measures 6ft from edge to edge.

There is insulation in the panels and roof. Also I’ve installed a small adjustable mushroom vent in the roof, that was fun.

I have actually replaced all of the window rubbers once, so they’re less than 10 year old too (I forget when I did it).

Unfortunately the mid-left quarterlight window still leaks at the bottom under heavy weather. From what I can tell the rest are all sealed though.

The door seals have also been done at some point and they all seal well. Don’t think there’s any leaks.

The door locks work, although the front left doesn’t quite lock so well from the outside. Bit of lube should do it. I have a spare key too.
The roof rack is included. I made this with a few old roof rack mounts and a couple of pallet tops bolted on. It’s lasted ages but it is now falling apart, but really only needs the wooden tops replaced and would be good. I had the roof box (included) bolted to that too but recently took it off for cleaning.

There’s some big bits of cushion foam I can include too.

I’ll throw in the Saltrock Dude window covers.

Some bits if you want em: storage containers, hook-up lead with regular sockets on the end, bowl full of screws.

Overall The DreamCatcher is pretty much running, and with a good tune up could be turning heads, back on the road in no time. This charming, old Baby is 57 year old, she’s had plenty of work done, she’s been kept alive all this time. The number of these iconic machines is reducing all the time and I hope that Dreamy doesn’t have to become one of those yet.

I'd definitely suggest viewing first.

Pics defo look more like Beddgelert than Jarrow (in your profile location);). Lucky you moving there.

Does the guy who lives at "Bedw Arian" still have his beige 68 Beetle & early bay bus?

I see the beige beetle on the road often, smashing the mountain passes here. I've never seen his bus yet though.

*I've updated my profile. Definitely not Jarrow, haha. Thanks*

It must have been 1989 when i first went to Wales (as a kid in our 1979 Devon Moonraker, remember it already being full of rust at 10yrs since new) & saw those beige VWs at that house. He had an early bay tintop, & one or maybe two beetles 1968 or 69. All looked a similar shade of beige, all immaculate.
Over the 30+ years since i would only ever see a glimpse of them beneath his part opened garage door.

Only ever saw the beetle out once. Last time was 2021 or '22 when we stayed in Beddgelert just past his house . Beetle was a bit rougher than it used to be but still out & about in all weathers. Looked like original unrestored condition. It was tipping down at the time he drove past.

Sorry to hijack your post, good luck with your sale.
