as the title says I have a 72 crossover which has been stood for some time, the tank has been cleaned out but the gauge is reading full all the time any clues to what is could be would be helpful

thanks

Aren't you lucky....full tank   Sorry
Seriously though I would recommend checking the wire that leads to the top of the tank and then
make sure nothing is earthing in the wrong place.
The wire to the top of the tank might be caught somewhere and shorting out. Unplug from tank end if
no change , unplug from dash end.
I am no expert but it might help in the mean time and I am sure someone else will be along shortly.

Unrelated but similar for what it's worth...

I just had an earth prob (huge cloud of smoke out the dash as I'm driving along) and it was the black wire that runs from the fuse box and earths on the speedo housing. What caused the meltdown was the earth connection to the fuel guage, there is a fibre washer that isolates this connection from the metal housing and with age it had fallen off causing said connection to touch the metal.

When I found this out I noticed that my fuel needle banged over to full every time I made the two touch.

^^ this, start there as the black wire feeds a live to the whole back of the speedo and mine too was shorting out on the back plate causing the needle to go nuts. Quick and solid fix if that's the case is to hot glue the fuel gauge terminals in place to prevent shorting

thanks for responses I shall take a look this weekend, I hate electrics

cheers
