Can I have your views on aftermarket air filters over og got a SA crew cab import that had about a foot of soil on top of the fuel tank that I reckon must get drawn into the carb,

Boo. Boo Boo Boo.

Firstly, and most importantly in a VW, they don't have any warm air pre-heat, which because of the carb's location in relation to the engine (long way away) is an important piece of kit that keeps your fuel vaporised.

Secondly, they are generally pretty course and don't actually filter much. Unless you get a fancy dancy one. The cheap ones are colloquially known as "Instant rebore kits".

Thirdly, they're generally not tall enough- you've need as a rule of thumb twice the opening diameter as a height with a filter to maintain laminar flow through it, otherwise it's like someone holding their hand near the carb throat all the time.

Fourthly, The oil vent holes in 'em aren't big enough, which leads to excessive crankcase pressure and causes oil leaks.

Fifthly, they rust as soon as you look at 'em.

Hope this helps ;-)
