I have just spent 2 hours googling this query and have got a headache but no answers!
Then I thought about you guys!!
I have a Sony CDX DAB 6650 head unit running 2 door speakers at the front and 6x9's in th rock n roll bed.
I need a little bit more volume at times (without distorsion) so picked up a cheap amp at a car boot. It is a Kenwood KAC 821.
It is a 2 channel amp 150 watts so,my question is......
Can I just amp the rear speakers and run the front through the head unit?
The headunit has rca audio outs for both front and rear.
If I do this will I retain the fader front to rear??
I have read that you can power all the speakers off a 2 channel amp but you loose the fader option-the other option is to buy a 4 channel amp.
Any suggestions/advice out there?
Paul

In simple terms yes. 1 reservation though, make sure the 6 X 9's are rated for the 150 watt amp. Running all 4 speakers off one amp introduces a new set of issues. Run the rears through the amp and the rest follows as the front/rear fade will still work and should give a nice sound balance once adjusted.

Thanks for that info.I have been out looking under the r n r bed and it looks like the best fit would be to have the unit vertical as there isn't much room under there.Do they give off much heat?

They do get warm but not enough to worry about

I fitted my last one behind the passenger seat(between metal and seat back), and put a switch in so I could turn the amp off when camping.

Thanks for the reply did you put the switch on the lead from the headunitor on the cable that connects the amp to the battery?
With the amp off did all the speakers still work? I suppose they should be as good as before the amp fit.
cheers paul

Hi Paul

I put the switch in the main live I think....I did it a while ago. It would work just as well in the blue wire from the stereo.

The rears wouldn't work when the amp is off, but if you have well installed front mids and tweeters in the front it will still give good output. You only really need the amp to drown out road noise and engine. Running a small amp will run for quite a while off the battery, but for a long weekend camped up you don't want it to go flat.

Keep us posted.

Jon
