So, i was up the bodyshop yesterday and the guy started asking whether i had considered dipping the shell then getting it protected liked electroplating. not sure whether it was electroplating but was along the same lines. he was a little concerned on how i was going to protect the inner parts of the shell to stop them rusting. i'm not talking about squirting a load of waxoyl down the sill or in the wheel arches, but more between two skins of metal i.e. rear corners where you have the inner metal panel and the outer, but no way of getting right in and protecting it.

has anyone done this, what are you experiences and does anyone know of a place that can do it around cardiff/bristol?

theres a place in birmingham and i think theres a new one near schofields up north. Costs a fair bit approx £1k but has a lot of benefits ie no D.A. ing for hours and hours and like you say hard to reach rustproofing...well worth every penny in my book

just gotta be aware that it can raise a few issues you didnt know existed, but as Scott says big time saver......

my mate brought the por petrol tank kit,the cleaner didnt touch the inside so he took it to: http://surfaceprocessing.co.uk/for-cars.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it came back looking brand new shiney bright metal.wished he never wasted his time and money doing it by hand.

I had my bus dipped last year.I did know the bus was rusty thats why i had it dipped but the process is very aggressive and will reveal lots of places you would not even think about having to replace(if your bus is rusty)also all the hinges on panels have now seized solid.I would have it done again on my bus as it will be rock solid when its finished. The only panels it as on it from when it was dipped are the front dog legs and rear wheel tubs  .It will be going back when the welding is finished for a light dip and e coating.

i thought that you should take all of the ecoating off the outer panels if you are going to skim it before painting anyway, so the DA'ing is still an issue there?

i think i am going to leave due to the added cost of the dip and the ecoating. it SHOULD be pretty solid after all of the welding that its having, but like you said you never know

Nooo! E-Coat is a protective rust inhibiting layer and should be left on.

The confusion comes from repair panels, most modern genuine manufacters panels come E-Coated. Where as repair panels for olds vws come with a layer of crap paint thats only intended to stop corrosion during storage.

If you are having your bus dipped you will need for it to be dipped to get back to bare metal, then welded up, then dipped again, then e coated and then you will need to start applying filler, high build etc Obviously you will need to key the e-coat to apply anything over the top, but its easy to do, where as removing old paint can sometimes be a nightmare.
