Looks like an engine to me

In all seriousness, it is pre '63 as it has stale air heating. Even if it is a 1600 (carb size suggests not) it's a single port engine. I'm not sure if it has the engine support bar holes either.

Look at that exhaust, bet you could trip up a few pedestrians with that bad boy on :D

You could get him to measure across the exhaust manifold holes end to end (cylinder 2-4),that would determine if it's a 1200 or a 1300/1600. 1200 is slightly narrower.

The shouds round the J tubes are cool....

I bet the van will be well toasty with them bad boys on.... :p

Well it has separate generator stand, so it is 34hp or newer. So from '62-> or something. The fan housing is not early type (25/30hp), but it seems to be 181/thing fanhousing, late type, but no heating outlets. Or was it so that for some time in '62 there was new enginecase, but still old type heating. Exhaust seem to be bus type. Distributor early sixties, with internal condenser.

Oh, '67 BAY is probably right. I always concider Split as early beetles only...
